Are casters on a drill press a smart idea in terms of safety? In any event, I look forward to more welding goodness!
Sub'ed!
thanks guys
casters on a drill press (especially this one) are no problem. The lateral torque is minimal, and the press action is straight down, so its all good. Also I need to be able to move it easily near a door to ventilate when cutting thick steel with dark cutting fluid poison

dimes roll tomr

Is it possible that I see casters with locks in this modshop mod?

Good for you CR... good for you. You are indeed a fortunate man to have such space at your disposal.

Yo dawg I heard you like modding so we modded your modding tools so you can mod while you mod.

Bored? Can't find anything to do? That's how it usually is when I start thinking of stuff like this.

Also,
I think you could hide some ccfl's on the underside of those legs, for some neon-underglow style.
And why move the press, when you can move the air? A couple deltas in a bank and you won't have to worry about fumes. Duststorms, maybe, but that's a risk I'm willing to take for you.

Ive been waiting for this. I don't think that puny little table is much fun when holding that thing, If it's as much weight as the one we have here.
Sub'd

Is that Maya or 3DSMax?

3dsmax, which I couldnt get to ray trace render for some reason
(on old p4 machine)
Sweet, I love shop improvements, fixtures and jigs!
You've got welding gear?
That looks like a sweet drill press! I wish my table had an adjusting height mechanism like yours.
Looks sound as usual mate!

notes on that drill press, in case anyone wants to know:

got it at Lowes for $109
weighs about 60 lbs
has adjustable speed (via belt change) and has adjustable laser sights which is pretty good
also has adjustable table height, and bit stop depth

overall not a bad kit for 100 bucks
Watch... right after be builds the trolley, he'll step into a deal for a really expensive press with a knob instead of belts.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I've got one with adjustable belts, but no bit stop or adjustable table (well it goes up and down, but not by crank.) Those are important/useful features. I picked it up used for $50, but I think there's maybe a loose spindle or something as it's rattling a bit as it turns.

Drill Press Stand - Day 01 - frame start

loaded some square steel tube on the chop saw and got started, lopped off the end at 45d

started cutting the parts I needed

after the parts were cut for the top base

cut one leg at 7-7.5 degrees and 16.25"

used the le as a template for the others

this song came on... it was like a "this is the money you could be saving with Gieco" moment

and just to clarify, I have taken a lot of pics of the lil satellite radio, those lil speakers are by no means what I listen to it thru, in fact they are off. Here's where it eminates from...
(one shelf below)

after cutting the top base rails and the legs

set up a welding station

tacks and partial welds on the top base

contraptions to weld the outter and inner corner joints

let us grind

set up to tack the first pair of legs

tack action

test

tomr ill knock up the other two legs and then make the base square (or thereabouts)

thanks for watching
