Ok I know once one puts files into the recycle bin and emptys it the files are not deleted they just marked so that it can be rewritten...so how can I completely delete a file so that nobody can bring up the past? ( I was watching CSI tonite and thought damn what if.....)

here is one here that removes them completely and its free
File shredder

edit: just after reading too that they can even read stuff of a freshly formatted hdd

I would think that there would be a program out there that would totally get rid of files....

per say you give you computer to someone and you give them your copy of Winxp..maybe you are a criminal and want to cover your tracks.....maybe you got lots of porn and want nobody to look at it....I dunno....just kinda thought about it last nite...

well if you have actual files I would recommend cross-shredding then burning them


but if you mean files in computers then you can either crush your hdd and through it in the river or you can download Ccleaner. Its free and there is a setting to set the delete algorithm to the USA's department of defense deleting standards. download that here http://www.ccleaner.com/

you can also download http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html (spybot S&D) which has a built in shredder which you can tell it to overwrite as many times as you want.

I have bought a few used HDDs, for the average user completely wiping the disk with a program like "Kill Disk" is sufficent. Most people are not going to take your old HDD in to some data recovery service and pay hundreds of dollars to find out what may have been on there. If however you are involved in some criminal activity, well thats a different story. Use the sledge hammer! If you are selling an old computer just reformat and reinstall the OS, the average Joe is not going to find any of your old info.

all I did to find old files that were on my puta post format was run Restoration from download.com.....
