I had to do a computer components report in my computer class so for the people who dont know some of the components, this should help you out.

Computers and Their Components

Computers are used in just about everyone’s daily lives, whether it is for business, gaming, or writing your best friend an email. Computers are used all over the world, they are used to launch NASA space shuttles, they are used to store top secret government files, and they are used in most homes for just about anything. Computers are such a big part of our lives, but most people don’t even know what a CPU is, or even seen the inside of their computer to see what makes it tick. All the tasks like typing an email or saving a photo are all done using some part of the computer.The simplest things about a computer you probably already know, such as the mouse, keyboard, monitor, case, floppy drive, and the DVD or CD drives. But what you don’t probably know is what makes your computer work. Components such as the hard drive, motherboard, CPU (central processing unit), RAM (random access memory), video card, sound card, power supply, operating system, and case fans are what you don’t see. When you press the power button to start a computer, an operating system kicks in and tells the computer how to operate. The operating system is a piece of software that makes the computer work, it allows the user to tell the computer what to do. Although you can not physically see the operating system, it is there, stored in your hard drive. The operating system also stores and manages data and controls the sequence of the software and hardware’s actions. The most popular operating systems are Microsoft Windows and Macintosh or MAC.The main part of the computer is the motherboard otherwise known as a mobo. The motherboard is a circuit board that connects everything to everything. The motherboard connects all of the components of your computer to each other. These things include your mouse, keyboard, monitor, power supply, hard drive, memory (ram), video card, sound card, fans, CPU, printer, scanner, and digital camera. You may not notice but when you go to plug in your mouse, you are not plugging it into your case, you are plugging it straight into the motherboard. The motherboard holds a powerful tool that is called the FSB (front side bus). The higher FSB you have the faster your computer will be able to run your memory, and the faster your computer itself can carry out instructions. The motherboard basically looks like a thin green board with a bunch of little round cylinders and rectangles on it. All you see of the motherboard on the outside of your computer is the plugs. The case of your computer is only metal and plastic; it doesn’t contain any wiring or circuit boards, although many people think the case is the computer itself. A power supply usually comes with a case and varies in watts of power. A normal computer power supply is usually around 250 watts. A gamer case is usually around 350 watts and up, if you are a true gamer, like myself, you usually have at least 420 watts. Computer gamers have high tech and top of the line components which require more power from your power supply.Some components that store memory inside the computer are RAM and a hard drive. A hard drive is your main storage spot on your computer. A hard drive is a match box shaped item with three plug like spots in the back. The first plug going left to right is for your motherboard, your hard drive is connected directly to your motherboard. The second, what looks to be a plug, isn’t a plug at all. This is your jumper section; this section usually has about 10 pins sticking out of it. All hard drives are different, but Western Digital IDE hard drives usually have 10 pins. These pins are in 2 rows of 5, and a little box type thing on the end of one of the sets of pins. The box (jumper) connects two parallel pins together vertically. The jumper is there incase you have more than one hard drive in your computer. If you have two hard drives in your computer, the first and primary hard drive would be called the Master Drive and the second would be called the Slave Drive. You can set your information to be stored in both or you could have certain information stored in one, and other information stored in another.

A component that stores memory temporarily is known as physical memory or RAM. RAM can only be read or changed by the user or computer. Ram consists of many tiny computer chips that hold millions of bytes of information on a circuit board that is inserted into a DIMM slot on a computer’s motherboard. A memory stick looks like a ruler cut in half, and is usually a green shade with black rectangles on it which is the actual ram. The memory stick is inserted into a slot that is specially designed to fit that type of memory stick. There are usually 2-4 memory stick slots on a motherboard which are called DIMM slots.A byte of information is usually thought of as a pattern that represents a number between 0 and 255. A byte can represent the entire alphabet, numeric digits, upper and lower case letters, punctuation marks, and many more things. A kilobyte can store about 1,000 characters, while a megabyte can store 1 million characters, then we move up to a gigabyte which can store about 1 billion characters. These two terms, MB, megabyte, GB, Gigabyte will be mentioned throughout this report so it is important to know what they mean.Memory is also stored outside of a computer on a CD, magnetic floppy disks, external hard drives, or a DVD. Floppy disks usually can store about 2 megabytes of information. External hard drives can store huge amounts of information depending on the size of the hard drive you buy. DVDs and CDs can store a lot of information too, a CD can store around 680 megabytes of information, and a DVD can store about 8.5 gigabytes of information. A hard drive by far can store much more information than the other three but a CD can store as much information as 100 floppy disks, and a DVD can store about 12 times as much as a CD.The CPU, or central processing unit, is the part of the computer that translates commands and runs programs. The faster the processor speed you have the faster your computer will be able to run. The highest speed of a CPU as of right now is an Intel Pentium 4 3.8 GHz. The higher the speed, the faster your computer will be able to operate, but the more that processor is going to cost. AMD and Intel are the two main types of processors on the market today. AMD is known for faster frame rates on games, while Intel’s are “quad pumped†and can handle many more operations at the same time. Most computers are around a 2.0 GHz processor, the computer in front of you is probably lower than a 1.3 GHz processor. Gamers usually have over 2.8 GHz Intel processor or over a 3000+ AMD processor because games require vast amounts of memory. They have to calculate equations and communicate with the game server. The CPU is a single piece of silicon that contains millions of tiny wired electrical components. The CPU isn’t much bigger than a half dollar. CPUs temporarily store data or instructions in a location called a register. The program counter is a special register that keeps track of which instructions are running now and which instructions should be run later. While the CPU is calculating the current functions, such as clicking on a desktop icon and bringing up the program, it moves to the next instruction from memory. The instruction is stored in the memory so when it is time for the instruction to be carried out, the instruction travels along the bus from the computer’s memory to the CPU. Thus, the program counter changes so that it contains the location of the instruction that will be preformed next. This is continually carried out until all of the instructions are complete. Several instructions may be in process at the same time each at a different stage in its instruction cycle. Thus, this is called pipeline processing.Video cards are also an important component to most computer graphic artists and gamers. Home owners usually stick with the integrated graphics on their motherboard, or the cheap card their computer came with. Most home computer owners don’t even know what a video card is. A video card boosts your graphics on your computer to whole new levels. Gamers especially know this because of the high resolution and frame rates needed to play most games out on the market today. Most gamers go with an ATI x800 Pro or a NVIDIA 6800GT because of their top of the line graphics and their multiple parallel pipelines. The normal homeowner should upgrade their graphics card to get extra performance out of their computer. A video card such as an x800 runs about 400 dollars and up but you can easily buy something that will boost your computers performance for 50 bucks at Best Buy.Sound cards are also an option but are usually not necessary unless your computer’s motherboard doesn’t have integrated sound. There isn’t much competition for sound cards because they really serve no purpose unless you are doing amazing effects with sound, or you want crystal clear 7.1 surround sound. Most people in gaming don’t even buy sound cards because they serve no purpose or they think the integrated sound card in their motherboard will handle the job. Although they may think this, there are definite sound changes heard when you have top of the line sound cards.A cooling system for your computer is an important asset that is another main component of your computer. Without a cooling system in your computer, you could actually fry an egg on your CPU. Although your computer should turn itself right back off if a cooling system isn’t installed, you would be lucky if you didn’t fry everything in your computer if you left your computer on for over 15 minutes without a cooling system. CPUs usually are cooled by two things, a heatsink and a fan. A thermal paste is put on top of your CPU, and then your heatsink is locked secured in place on top of it. A fan is then placed on top of the heatsink pulling air through the heatsink and away from the CPU. A heatsink basically looks like a metal block with spaces carved out of the block so its looks like a 2â€x2†pad of grass. There should be fans on your power supply already to help keep the power supply cool but more fans are usually placed at the back of the case to help cool your entire system. Many gamers that play lots of games cause huge loads on their computers generating a lot of heat. Therefore most gamers usually put 3 or 4 extra fans in their computer to help keep it cool. If you only have 1 fan in your computer it would be a wise investment to add one more fan to your computer. This should extend the life of your computers components. Just like a car engine, it needs to be kept cool.You should now know all the basic components of a computer. If you would like great detail or depth on more of this subject you can search the web, information is everywhere. You can be amazed what your computer can do, especially when you overclock it, but that’s a different story. Your computer is a machine, it is always thinking, and it can only think so much unless you open up more possibilities with better components.

Here's some tips:
1. When you're talking about PSUs you say this: "A gamer case is usually around 350 watts and up" you should replace case for PSU, I know that's what you meant

2. When you're talking bout onboard graphics you should also mention that since they don't use a separate processor and memory for the graphics alone, it affects overall system performance.

That's pretty much it, very nice work.
