I have a desktop and laptop both are wireless. I dont have a wireless router. I would like to connect my laptop to my desktop to transfer files time to time. How would I go about connecting to each other wirelessly? Both of them arn't connected to any networks atm but when I search for wireless connections I dont see my computers in relation to one another.

You have to set on up in a AD HOC mode. then you can connect them wirelessly.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a crossover cable. Then make the work groups the same. Right click my computer< map network drive, voila.
how do I do this
Ad Hoc? you go to

Control panel>Network and Internet Connections>My Network Places>View Network Connections>Right click on the wireless connection>Wireless networks tab>Add

Then you create a SSID (example: My network)

Network Authentication should be set to open.
Data Encryption should be set to Disabled
Select the little box that says "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network"
Click ok
close all of that
go to other computer and it should be there
connect both of them on your network.

I assume you know how to set up file sharing?

Ok apparently I dont know how to setup a workgroup.
if you already have a couple patch cables get a cheap switch, usually thats a bit easier then using the crossover cable method, usually thats a pain in the a$$

If you are on xp click start button, Settings, Network connections
a window will open and on the left under "Network Tasks" click setup a home or
office network, that will start the network wizard and show you exactly what you need to do and walk you through it.

There might be a similar way on vista but I don't have a vista machine in front of me to check or tell you, but i imagine it's similar.

To change workgroups in XP, open control panel, click on System, then click on the Computer Name tab, click on change, enter a Computer Name and a workgroup, and reboot. Make sure the workgroup is the same on both machines.
I don't think this is your best choose if you try the crossover cable. The easiest way would just be too buy a few cat5 cables and a switch. If you use the crossover you have to change ip's and what not. It's fairly confusing if you don't understand networking.
