Hello guys,

I am about to give my brother SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7970 OC 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16.
He cannot afford new card, and he liks playing games, so, i am a good brother and i am giving it to him as a present.

What card should i get? AMD or Nvidia? Budget is $500-600.

I live in Canada, and mostly i am getting stuff from canadacomputers.com , so, if you can help me decide.

I am playing World of Tanks a lot, and other games too.

I have i7 3930K, 16GB Ram, 2x180GB SSD (RAID0) etc, as my system, not sure if this is needed, but, just in case

Thank you!

Obviously will be either 780 or 290 based on that budget.
Look up some reviews for the games that you play and compare them.

If it was me id be getting the 290 or even the 290X for $49 more then your budget.
But I only play BF4 and Thief with mantle at the moment. And Id be sticking my water cooling on it so temps arnt a problem for me.

Well for the price range depending on which brand you want for Nvidia it would be a 780 and a 290x for AMD. Though I would go for a 290x if you want brute performance over a 780 and Mantle and a 780 for Nvidias exclusive features. Either way its not a bad choice.

Either way it stands that save your money on a 290 and still have better than a 780. That's a fact.

Well yeah but if he wants more performance and is willing to spend the dough why not a 290x.

R9 290X is not a price/performance card. For the extra money you are paying you don't get a corresponding amount of performance.

i.e. $500-550 r9 290 vs $650-750 R9 290X

The NDA is up on the 8th for the 295, not sure that equates to being available for customers, but probably not til the end of the month.

It's price tag is not yet known even by reviewers that are in possession of the cards. Speculation points to it being around $1000-1500.

Thank you for responding.

I understand its way over my budget, i just wanted to see if that is happening, as i was just in candacomputers store, and sales guy told me about that.

I am still deciding what to do ... i think i can increase my budget a bit, maybe even 600-650.

How much in % (approx, if that can be answered) r9 290x is better then my current 7970? (or even r9 290)? (or even nvidia 780 or 780ti)

thank you all!

Like 40% better than the 7970, 10% better than 290/780, and 5-10% worse than the 780ti.

Edit, these are all relative to the 290x.

7970 is around 45% worse than the 780ti, 40% worse than 290x, and 30% worse than 290/780.

Thank you VERY much for responding.

I was just browsing this forum a little bit, someone mentioned that in the next few weeks\month, amd prices should go down (i can find the post again if needed), is this truth or this is just another story? i dont have a problem waiting couple of weeks, if i can save some money, or get the better card for the budget.

Thanks again

Thank you!
