a 5970 is pretty much 2 5850 GPUs on one chip. They should have very similar performance. Your first benchmark shows a 68xx series chip being tested not a 58xx. That would explain your difference. 6xxx series cards scale better in CF than any 5xxx cards

5970 is just 2 5850 chips but scaledd down, that's why 5970 is not as fast as the 5850's!

Balla needs to upgrade his eyes. My eyes my eyes!

Btw, it's 2 5870s underclocked to 5850 right?

^^ This

Not to mention, the 5970's in QuadFire, if memory serves, scaled like poo compared to the 6xxx cards. On top of that, the 5xxx series cards had a very hard time with tesselation.

6 series has 4 tess cores per GPU unit. 5 series has 1 tess core per GPU unit.

first of all, we dont know anything about the cpu, cos anything for 5970+5870 is a bottleneck till its not 4ghz (a good amd cpu, not talking about dual k8)

i'd think that it needs at least 4.5 to stretch its legs

now when there's too much gpu power thundering upon a cpu, it actually underperforms
so if that cpu is not oc'd to good levels, the setup does not perform good

The first test is 2 barts GPU at 1000/1200 with a Phenom II X6, OC'ed pretty high too, not CFX, and the second is a 5970 running at 960/1250 with a 5850 at 1006/1304 in a i7-930 at 4.3GHz. Still, 2 barts at that speed with a fast CPU get more FPS in a DX11 title than any 3-way CF of 58XX series cards due to what many people above have already said, better scalability, and tesselation improvements, amongst other. No real surprise here. In other games you'll probably see other outcomes. Driver support also affects the results pretty much.
