After reading many threads and hundreds of unorganized files on many pcs, i have decided to build a home server. This will be used to share music, movies, files, iso, software and steam to PS3. Here is what i have been able to put together:

Forgot to add this: SAMSUNG Black Blu-ray Drive SATA Model SH-B123L

1 drive will server as cache, and another drive as Parity. This will give me about 8.2TB of usable space. Any suggestions? Thanks

The 770 chipset doesn't have a graphics card. Do you have one as spare? You'll need one at least temporarily to be able to set the flash drive as the primary boot device. Also not sure if the board supports headless booting. How do you plan on installing 7 HDD's in the case? Are you planning on buying a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter/cage?

How will you be streaming files to the PS3? By default, unRAID doesn't come with a DLNA server and I'm not sure how difficult it is to install one.

I have an old x1050 pcie card which I will use. The case has 6 x 3.5 hd slots so I'll use one or two 5.25 adapter. There is a java script that will allow the unRaid to stream to the PS3. I'll give it a try and if not i will use windows media sever as a backup OS.

Sounds like you're good to go, then. Remember to flash the Samsung drives with new firmware if they don't come with it already.

I don't know if someone's used that motherboard before with unRAID but given the chipset, I would think the base hardware should be supported.
I read somewhere it's has to be AMD660 or above. I could be wrong, what motherboard could I use?

I have not looked at Amahi, if it does the same thing then i don't need to buy unRaid. I will definitely look into it. I have read that unraid uses its own system rather then Raid 5/10. what about Amanhi. My main concern in data loss. I was planning on running Raid 10 before i read about unRaid.

If i use Amahi, i don't need a cache drive. With a few changes:

If your familiar with WHS(drive-extender)Amahi greyhole works in pretty much the same way.It will pool all of your drives together to make one big drive. It also lets you select the number of copies of share that you'd like to distribute across the pool.So the more drives you've the more copies you can have on your server. And no you don't need a cache drive.

+rep so using amahi with greyhole will I still need a parity drive? I'll order as soon as I find another case, the Antec 300 just went out of stock.

You mentioned you wanted unRAID for some form of protection against data loss. You'll probably lose that with Amahi, unless you go with RAID or something.

If you only using 1 disk then yes you lose that data just like with any other OS.But with Amahi/greyhole if your using 2 or more drives and set it to construct 2 or more copies. Then there is a copy of that file/folder on each of the drives so the data is still there and accessible.

Now I don't know if greyhole will rebuild the data once you add a new drive on it's own.But it should be the same procedure when you expand greyhole with a new data drive.Fairly straight forward stuff.

So files are taking up more space because more than 1 copies are made. Would WHS be a better choice since i am able to get WHS at a deep discount from work.

WHS is a good choice, if it is version 1, its very stable now. If its version 2011 I would go with amahi. Grey hole and Drive extender are basically the same I believe. When you choose what folders you want duplicated so it only duplicates those you want. The other thing I would suggest is a different case, that case doesn't leave room of upgrades. I would suggest a case that has 5 1/4 drive bays in the front. it allows, depending on the bay device to put up to 5 drives in 3 bays. I got a good deal on the Xigmatex utgard with an extra bay device. I could also add another one to get up to 12 drives. You will find out how fast space runs out. With WHS it has computer backups too which will take up space.

True but for DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray rips, I don't need duplication. Parity-based protection is sufficient. I guess it all depends on the amount and type of data you're planning to store. Doing 1:1 backup of 10~20TB worth of rips isn't particularly easy on the wallet, but having to re-rip is a time-consuming chore. Imho, the protection unRAID and FlexRAID offer are ideal for this type of data.

The only version I could get from work was 2011. I think I'll try Amahi and see how that work. I was looking at another case:

since they ran out of the Antec 300.

There would be alot of DVDrips, Bluray rips and for the most part I'm not concerned about these because I can always grab the disc and do a re-rip. I want more protection for my files, photos, documents, and computer backups.
