It's a Phenom II 550 @ 3.8GHz at that. Would I see any real difference between that and an i5 at the same speed? This is the first generation i5 mind you. The games I play don't need anything more.

A dual core or quad core i5? - actually either one would be faster, clock for clock, Intel CPUs are much more potent, but why go for the older generation i5 when the new generation i5's are readily available? I would even go for a Sandy Bridge i3 with hyperthreading - (tomshardware.com did a review on them, they beat out Phenom II X4's in games)

Only game you will really see a difference is games that support Quad core. Games like GTA IV, BFBC2, SC2 will be better in the Intel CPU. I personally would wait for Bulldozer and prices of older CPU should go down.

Check out the i3 2120 in the Metro2033 benchmark - beats every single AMD processor including a 14FPS lead over an X3- if you think that the several hundred MHZ overclock that you can get from an AMD processor is going to by and far make up for the difference, I think your mistaken - as has been shown time and time again, SB processors are very strong clock for clock.

Also it gives a great upgrade path for future parts, such as being able to later grab a 2500k or 2600k when the budget affords it while seeing real gains right now
