I have a lab this term and we are doing a student design project. The lab is based on circuits and magnetism. We have done the whole capacitor, resistor, transistor, etc. thing this semester.

Some things were have considered are making the Tennis for Two, muon detector, and a kinetic flashlight.

Any other ideas of neat circuits that would take 4-5 hours? These both seem a bit on the difficult side so this hard or less is what my group is looking at.

Serial laser transmitter.

I'm making two as we speak. They connect via RS-232 DSub-9. Right now the units I designed are made for over 100M tranmissions.

Very fun.

Oh PS I found some TCP/IP serial drivers that I'm going to use to network via laser.

The one I posted a link to is much more basic than my design. It's a real simple design, you just have to make two.
