Except that they don't

If the .exe is dependent on other files in that folder and you simply copy it, then it will not be able to properly execute, a shortcut is simply a link back to that exe

Although... why in this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1366085/icon-within-an-icon-help my desktop does not have the arrow on the first picture... so now i'm confused... why does it now have?
