i'd say the i7 920 with the x58 is more for enthusiasts and overclocking where you can really push your hardware, 870s and their platform are just cheaper
860 supports less RAM, the RAM has to be slower, and it's dual channel instead of triple. It also has a 95W TDP vs the i7's 130W. The speed difference doesn't really matter, because if you're getting an i7 you should automatically overclock it.
I'd go with an AMD build for your friend and save some money. He really doesn't need an i7 for Borderlands.
The 860 also draws less power and runs slightly faster than the 920 because of the stock clock speed, while the 920 is at 2.6Ghz compared to the 860 which is at 2.8Ghz. But if you overclock it doesn't really matter.
If he is just gaming he should just get a 750 instead, that will do just fine.

I suggested him to go with AMD Phenom II X4 955 or 965 BE, but then we realized he won't save much since we will be getting the i5/i7 from Microcenter, and he personally likes Intel better
