Hey Overclock.net,

Need advice on which cpu is best for 3d animation, modelling, VRAY rendering, video editing and visual effects.Building a pc for rendering. Software used will be : 3d Studio Max 09 + Maya 10 + Adobe After Effects CS4 + Premier CS4 and other related software.

Intel Xeon X3440 2.5Ghz 8MB Cache LGA 1156
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz 8MB Cache LGA 1366
Intel Core i7 860 2.80Ghz 8MB Cache LGA 1156

How much ram? is 8 gigs of DDR3 enough?

best graphic card for rendering (quadro and firegl is TOO expensive)

Nvidia:
9800GT
GTS250
GTX260
GTX275

ATi:
4830
4850
4870
5870

other suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I'd say the i7 920, because you'll be able to make use of the high-speed, high-bandwidth triple channel memory - rather than the dual channel with any 1156 socket.

6GB (3x 2GB DIMMS) should be enough, and you'll have room for 12GB total in the future should you need it.

Definitely the 920. Get 6GB of ram to start with, and upgrade to 12GB when you can. Good quality ram is a plus when video editing and encoding.

Definatly go for the i7-920, it can EASILY go to 4.0GHZ with most high end air coolers Megahalems/True ... or the all on one water cooling like Corsair H50

Start with 6GB ram, ram prices are at an all time high, and have doubled in some areas....so upgrade to 12GB when prices go down (soon...alot)

You cant have 8GB as its tri channel...so its 3 or 6 or 9 or 12 (6 or 12 recomended ) - also make sure you get 1600mhz....

the graphics card...depends on your budget..i would recomend the gtx 260 (similar to HD 5770...or even HD4890)

Or the GTX 275...if you have the money...but its not much of an increase over the GTX 260

go with the 920 for reasons above, I would also go for 12Gb of ram - AE eats ram for breakfast as can VRAY.

I'd probably go with a Geforce for the GPU - Vray GPU only supports CUDA afaik, although I believe Chaos Group are working on OpenCL as well.

Many thanks for the quick replies, guys. The build is for my collage as we need to "request" a rendering pc for our work from the teachers.
