Core i7 965 OC Help

Hi,

I have an i7 extreme with an ASUS Rampage Extreme II board. I'm not able to get anything stable over 3.8. For right now, I have just been increasing the multiplier. Also, I'm using air cooling with a Cooler Master V8 and my temps are still high(idle around upper 40s), and I have ensured that it is seated properly with correct amount of compound.

Any guidance on OC this thing the right way would be appreciated. I have seen some 920s go to 4.2 with low voltages, I was expecting the 965 to "at least" be able to match that.

Have you changed the vcore?
I have. At first, I left it to auto which defaulted the vcore about 1.4, which I thought was out of spec since intel says to go to upto 1.375( I might be wrong about this). I kept dropping the vcore until i was at about 1.35 to get it stable.
you should just change the multiplier. and step with the voltage by a bit a time
1. First, when you see OCs of 4.2, you need to ask if HT is on or off. I have seen a lot of OCs at that level with HT off, not many with HT on.

2. I got to 4.0 vs. 160x25. Voltage at 1.32, QPI voltage at 1.3. Stable. HT On.

3. Getting above 4.0 has not been achievable for me. I don't think it is a temperature thing since it dies at low temps.
I tried your settings, 160x25 at 1.32, no dice.

I'm stable at 155x25 but with really high temps. I get high 40s idle and mid 80s load. I have reseated my CoolerMaster V8, reapplied compound... What kind of temps do you see?

There is one core that is always a lil bit higher in temps, even when load is distributed equally.

Here is a great guid that helped me. Give it a try and post your results.

Just wondering why you would turn off HT for a higher OC if the Core i7 are good because of the HT... You lose 4 threads...

That is a sweet reference. I will check it out. Thanks!
