Core i7 build be very critical about to pull the trigger (links to all parts)

537 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  ObviousNinja
The main reason for this build is the upgrade to DDR3. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and applied if there is not a significant price increase i.e. more than $150. I am trying to stay as far under $1500 as possible. Point out any possible upgrades or better performing parts in the same range. The main use of this rig would be gaming and folding when not gaming. Thanks you guys are great.

PC Build

CPU- Core i7 920 $289- Cheapest i7 on the market don't think I'll be able to get better than this

Mobo- Asus P6T Deluxe V2http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131365 $290- It's still kind of up in the air between this and the revolutionhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...E16813131358&T. If I did the revolution it would hold my full build back a few months considering id have to find 3 good Nvidia cards to go true 3 way SLI with. But since my current plan is crossfire with my current ATI card this does not sit well. I was also looking at GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3Rhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128386. It is $80 cheaper and has a faster memory standard but I wont utilize all the SATA ports and I dont care much for PCI slots that have nothing to do with anything I will ever put in my computer.

RAM- G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 1600 (PC3 12800) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231247 $105 shipped- I am not very knowledgeable about RAM but this seemed like solid pretty fast RAM. Note if I were to go with the gigabyte this would definitely change to something more 2000hzish.

Peripherals

GPU- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 512MB X2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102810 $179- I already have one of these cards this will make two for the crossfire.

HDD-Current http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148335- 60$ to replace on my old system.

Optical Drive- SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe SATA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151173 $25- Good drive

Case Components

Case- Antec 1200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129043 $180- Nice solid case good airflow

CPU Cooling- Noctua NH-U12P http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835608007 $76.99

PSU- ABS Tagan BZ800 800W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817814014 $100 in combo with CPU- Want a PSU where I could go to some light water cooling if I wanted

If there is anything amiss let me know thank you for your time.

Everything seems alright.

I'd change the PSU to a better brand though. Try this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009

As for the CPU cooler, that's alright.. but I'd get a TRUE instead.
I would get the Seagate 7200.12 500GB : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148395

It has the fastest read/write speeds of any 7200 RPM hard drive; it even beats the r/w times of raptors.
good build but there's no point of upgrading if it's just for ddr3, there's really not a bir real life difference with ddr2

Modular is what I am going for thanks for the suggestion and I am going to go with the true it is just hard to bring myself to pay $100 for a heatsink but I am close enough already

Microcenter also has the UD3R @ 184 after the rebate.

Going with an i7 from there wasn't aware they were that much less.

The P6T Deluxe V2 seems to be a gimped version of the original. No onboard SAS, among other things.

Motherboard memory standard is largely irrelevant. The max memory speed you can use is totaly dependant on the max uncore clock you can manage, which in turn is totaly dependand on how lucky your CPU is and how much voltage you are willing to ram down it's throat.

Frankly, the chances of you getting 4GHz uncore 100% stable with that Noctua air cooler are not good. So DDR3 2000 is a waste.

The UD3R is an exelent board, despite it's low cost. It's not the best, but if you can save 80 bucks, and don't plan on Tri-SLI, it's a great choice. Also, since the UDR3R and the UD3R-SLI are exactly the same boards you should beable to flash one to the other.

I would definately get the 1GiB 4870 if I intended to crossfire. Frame/texture buffer size does NOT increase in Crossfire or SLI. You will seriously limit your performance at high resilutions and AA values with the 512MiB cards.

Now going for the 1G card and the UDR3R board we'll see how it comes out. Oh and not going for ddr3 2k

I would suggest the Corsair 850w as well. I understand you want modular, but the 1200 is a very nice case and already has a hole for all those cables to sneak right into perfectly.

Just a thought..
Cpu- i7 920- from microcenter 222
Mobo- Asus P6T Deluxe- I decided to not get the V2 upon closer inspection thanks 003 for the save. The Gigabyte was nice but I feel the P6T is worth the extra $80
RAM-G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 1600 (PC3 12800)
GPU- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 1GB going to crossfire with my current card
PSU- not upgrading I'm just keeping the one I bent all to hell because I'm dumb. Probably going to take off the other side panel and place it outside the case.
HDD- same
Optical Drive- Samsung
Case- Antec 1200
CPU cooling- Thermalright TRUE Black 120 Cpu cooler- not sure if I should lap the bottom or if ill just end up making it worse

That is the purchase gentlemen pictures coming soon.

I would avoid anything but WD. I can't tell you how often "my" shop see's Seagate and Fujitsu drives go bad compared to WD. It's ridiculous.

And yeah, microcenter is the way to go fir i7. Don't know how they do it, but that's pretty much their only good price. RAM is decent, but not much else. Hopefully they have good rates on the 940 when they get 'em

A reviewer of the Antec 1200 said his caught on fire. I almost bought that but went w/ armor+ instead. Spent a little extra but its a pretty solid case.

Not a bad system though

looks good

I would definitely lap the TRUE and grab a good quality 120x38mm fan for it.

My temps on my Q6600 @ 3.2ghz dropped ~15c by lapping and putting a Panaflo 120x38mm 86CFM fan on it. (original fan was a cooler master case fan 120x25mm)
