Core i9 or Dual Socket AMD Opterons?

So my friend in programming class said that Dual Socket AMD Opterons would be better then core i9 and im like hmm that could be debated so i brought it to you guys. Core i9 is 6 core 12 threads and 2 Opterons with be 2 6 core processors so 12 cores. Which do you think would be better. id rather have core i9. less power, heat, and problems.

They'll both perform solidly, but Skulltrail versus i7 has proven that 8 real cores beat out 8 virtual ones in tasks where they're all utilized. My money is on the AMD platform.

I owned a dual socket AMD machine (a couple years ago now), and it was one of the most durable, solid machines I've ever loved.
Yeah i would go the core i9 way since its intel, generally better in Programing encoding and that type of stuff, Plus its single cpu Less problems So yeah INTEL all the way, plus it pwns any amd.

thats the thing. utilization lol. he said it would better with everything to have 2 seperate opterons. Im pretty sure one Core i9 would beat it in games

Nope. The game performance of the relative platforms is completely related to the speed they operate at. Neither will be a barn burner in games.

You will be able to overclock the i9 unlike the Opterons.

if they were running same speeds what would you say then??

The i9 trumps it at the same speed in games. At other tasks however, the Opterons will outperform.

If you can get the i9 machine near 4Ghz it won't matter that the Opterons have 6 more physical cores, the tide will shift in Intel's favor.

It all depends on the application. Clock for clock, the Intel has the Opty's beat. However, as Ronin said, if the application benefits from more (real) cores, then the AMD would do it. I wish people on this forum would use "better for gaming" instead of just "better". 9 times out of 10, that's what they are referring to.

thats exactly what i was telling my friend and he was like no 6 processor would rape 1 and im like jsut shut up. and hes a noob hes never put a comptuer together and i dont think he knows even how a corei 7 processor works. he said its a 7 core processor and then the 8th core is the memory controller.

One Core i9 vs. two Opterons, well, it's debatable, as you've seen. But it's more likely you'll have a dual Xeon versus dual Opterons, and in that case, the Xeons will wipe the floor with the Opterons.
i9 ftw! I never want to deal with the hassle of 2 cpu's, seems like a PITA when it comes to anything involving the bios.
