Corsair HX850 question

1043 Views 18 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Chilly
I just received my replacement HX850 from RMA after my other one died after 2 whole months of use. I'm sure this is a rare occurrence for Corsair PSU's but it is what it is.

What I'm wondering is if it's safe to hook all 4 of my molex case fans to one peripheral cable? I have the Antec 902 so that would be 3 120mm fans and 1 240mm fan. The peripheral cable has 4 molex connectors (one for each fan) but would this be safe or should I split the load between another cable?

I previously had the 3 120mm fans on a single cable and the 240mm fan on a separate cable. How would you guys recommend hooking up the case fans?

Yup, it's perfectly safe. Each molex connection is rated to handle up to 75 watts, though sometimes it can take more than that, so a few case fans are nothing to it.

Do you mean each molex peripheral cable? How much wattage does a single 120mm case fan need? How about a 240mm fan?

No, I mean each connection on each cable. A normal 120mm case fan draws between a single watt and 8 watts. So like I said, a few of these would be nothing to the PSU (and I have the same one in my other machine, so I'd know
).

Not many. It's usually on the order of less than 1 watt to maybe around 5 watts per fan.

Alright. I figured that it would be okay, just wanted some reassurance since one went bad already. If another Corsair PSU goes bad for me I'm really going to be the unluckiest person in the world.

Yeah. Having such a fantastic unit go bad at all is unfortunate, having ANOTHER go bad would mean you've got something that requires a thorough exorcism.

Seriously. Hmmm now I'm wondering if this is why my overclocked 4890 wouldn't run stable...

Maybe it was because the PSU was faulty all along.

I would venture to guess that this is exactly why.

It's weird though because I never had any problems whatsoever with anything else functioning correctly. I had a rock solid stable 4 GHz OC as well as a stable 3.8 GHz OC. Never once had a BSOD. Just system freezes when I tried to game at the 4890's factory overclocked settings, forcing me to hard boot the system -- quite a few of them.

Not long after a bios flash and a subsequent "sleep mode" was when the PSU just randomly died. I tried waking up the pc by clicking the mouse and nothing....dead.

I wonder if there are any adverse effects on a PSU being constantly woken up from "sleep mode"?

I doubt it, however I never use Sleep Mode because it is useless to me. I just leave my system on 24/7 and the only Power Management feature I'm using is I have it turn my monitor off after 2 hours. I also have the screensaver set to come on after 10 minutes.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do this time. I don't normally use sleep mode either, but I think my motherboard has some sort of "AI Nap" feature that puts it to sleep while continuing to run processes at minimum power consumption.

Hmmm I wonder if that was conflicting with the OC somehow? Maybe the LLC or something since I had it enabled...?

I gotta figure out a way to disable that.

Have you adjusted Windows 7's Power Options yet?

Great PSU, I use 1 molex cable for all my fans (4 120mm 1 200mm) and one sata for my drives.

Odd yours died that quick, but at least Corsair has a great RMA policy.

I don't have a video card (still waiting on the 5850 and RMA'd the 4890) so I can't use my sig rig right now. Stuck on my old P4 rig for the time being. But yeah I plan on turning it off in Windows 7's power options as well as the bios itself.

But did you adjust the settings at all back when you could see?

Yeah I switched it back and forth a few times depending on what I was doing, but mostly I left it on because I didn't think about it being an issue. Ever since the PSU died there's been a constant storm of ideas and worries running through my head.

Meh. It was just a bad PSU.

I have 6 120mm fans connected to one Molex connector, while using the "extension" molex cables that the fans came with. No problems whatsoever, and this is my HX750
