Ok well I have a choice, right now I have 2x512MB sticks of Corsair Valueselect DDR2 533 and I can either stick with them and MAYBE later on get some nice RAM or I can pick up 2 more sticks of the same RAM (for 4x512MB, 2GB) of it. It is rated for 4-4-4-12 timings at 1.8v at DDR2 533 speeds however at those timings it will run DDR2 667, at 533 it will run with 3-3-3-9 timings and it can even hit DDR2 400 at 2-2-2-10 timings with 1.9v so its not that crappy at all.

i've got 4x512 Value select ddr2 667 pc5300 running at 500mhz with 3-3-3-8 timings and getting some great benchmarks. So i'd say they are not that bad at all.

i would say stick with what you have currently and save the money. you can upgrade the whole lot later to a much much better one and probably hit lots higher with ur oc.

Well with my highest suicide overclock (4005MHz) my memory was only at DDR2 535 and I am definitely not memory limited (CPU limited actually
) so its not necessarily that I would get a higher OC with new memory.....

So what you're saying is....I should go for it? Also, I have had amazing success with mine, the highest I tested it at was 700MHz @ 1.9v with 4-4-4-12 timings and it ran flawlessly but I didnt bother going any higher since my FSB was only 250 so the data was only being sent to my RAM at 250MHz (DDR 500) so there was no point running it any higher, its not like RAM does its own calculations or anything lol.

The DRAM latency will react differently at a 533MHz stream than it will at a 711MHz stream so even though the handoff strap of data stream between cpu memory controller and RAM can only speed at a certain degree there will be a difference in the Stop<-->Read<-->Write<-->Verify stages as with lower latencies the gates will switch quicker. You can think of this somewhat like being on an escalator. If you walk up the moving escalator at 4K/hr there will be a difference in your end result (reaching the top) if you walk up at 6K/hr even though the escalator is at a steady maximum stream. Think of the steps (the time it takes to put your foot cleanly on the step) as the latency.
This is only for comparitive views as it is somewhat different since there is no three stages on the step but you probably get my drift.

You will notice the extra Gig of RAM when you are gaming (Quake4/F.E.A.R. etc) and as well when you are doing multiple read/write/verifies such as database work and video decoding/encoding.

Thus it actually depends more on what duties you perform on your computer with regards to whether you should do it or not.

I have that stuff. Runs stable at 720 Mhz at 4-4-4-8 for me. Great deal, especially for my first rig. (That's at 185 FSB. Something wierd about my new PSU makes it unstable any higher, even if I drop the multis on the ram)

Ropey, I wasn't asking if I should get the Corsair Valueselect, I already have a gig of it and know its alright, I was asking if I should buy that or wait until I can afford better RAM (like say DDR2 [email protected] like the Crucial Ballistix on newegg)

Intel tends to have a higher multiplier so I say just go for it and get the second stick. However I've read your posts and it seems you'll be getting a newer intel processor? Whatever you do, Just make sure your ram is upto the job. What multiplier will the newer CPU's have? Buy your memory accordingly to that.
