I bought my current psu for only $17, it can still power my rig if I dont plug in the dvd drive
but I fear it will only get weaker with age. Its 3 years old already.

Im gonna buy from a local store, 15 minutes away. They have other brands but are a bit over my budget.
That corsair and cougar I posted earlier are the cheapest

$51 FSP HEXA 500watts 80Plus http://www.fsplifestyle.com/psu/hexa/hexa-500/
$54 HEC Cougar ST 600watts http://www.cougar-world.com/products/power_supplies/cougar_st.html
$54 Aerocool (Strike X) 500watts 80Plus Bronze http://www.aerocool.com.tw/power-supply/strike-x/80.html
$55 Antec 550watts Basiq VP550P http://store.antec.com/Product/power_supply-basiq_power/vp450/0-761345-23540-2.aspx
$59 FSP Raider 550watts 80Plus Bronze http://www.fsplifestyle.com/product.php?LID=1&PSN=380
$60 Thermaltake TT Smart 530watts (SP-530P) 80Plus http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001799
$65 Corsair CX 500watts (CX500) http://www.corsair.com/en/builder-series-cx500.html

the VP550P if you want to save some money, otherwise the S12II (if you can spend a little more).

may I ask why you would prefer the antec over the coolermaster and corsair counterpart?

The Coolermaster is known to completely die and then the Corsair just isn't on the same level as the Seasonic. The Corsair is a good PSU but the Seasonic is better for nearly the same price.

The majority of Corsair PSUs aren't made by Seasonic... most are made by CWT.

The vast majority in their current lineup are not, including the CX and VS under consideration.

As for the comment you're responding to, the CX is not as good as a Seasonic S12II, so if they're the same price, take that particular Seasonic over that particular Corsair CX power supply.

Those two are the best of the list, at their prices. I would say the same as well.

If you look at the electronics design, electrical performance, build quality, etc., those two are better than the others. Do you want a complete analysis, or what? Or at least, the Seasonic is better than the rest, while the Antec VP550P is better than the ones cheaper than it and not much different than a couple that are more expensive. VP550P is okay quality.

Not always, Seasonic makes some of their PSUs, but not all. Tom's hardware has a chart that shows which OEM makes PSUs for who, and Seasonic only made about half of Corsairs.

I could get one of these 600watt cougars
$51.16 http://www.cougar-world.com/products/power_supplies/cougar_sl.html
$53.87 http://www.cougar-world.com/products/power_supplies/cougar_st.html

can they run my sig rig if I replace my HD6850 with a 2x6pin card like HD7950?

My max budget for the psu is 60$ so the seasonic is really pushing it
I've yet to see a real bad rewiew of cougar PSU, and yet to see one praise them as the saviour of mankind.

If the "straw that breaks the camels back" is the very low demand from the DVD drive you really are running on the ragged edge.I would be curious enough to check the amp draw on that drive or stubb in a different drive and see if you can duplicate the condition.

Yes, because they'd never send anything as cheapo as the SL the OP is looking at, to reviewers. Just like Corsair wouldn't send VS to reviewers.

All companies that aren't just playing the lowest-end part of the market (and that have a marketing department with a clue) try to build their reputations by mostly sending out the mid-to-high end units to reviewers.

The dvd drive actually works if I plug it in, but it cant get enough power to burn a blank dvd, sometimes it cant even read successfully.
If I unplug my 2x120mm casefans, the dvd drive burns successfully and can read discs without a hitch.
