Could use tips on overclocking XFX 4870

What do you fellas recommend the safest amount I can overclock this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-436-_-Product

I don't have a bunch of money currently to shell out on cooling, and if I had to, I could just put a bigass fan next to my case for the time being. What tools do you guys recommend that I use for overclocking? Is the stickied thread still relevant?

Every card is different of course but 800/1000 would be a good overclock. Some will do more of course and some less.

I just use CCC with windows 7 and ATI Tool to stress test for stability. Make sure your vrm temps don't get to high. You can check those temps with GPU-Z.

Thanks, have you ever OC'd with this certain card? Just asking, because I wanna try and learn the ins and outs of it before I even start. Can you point me to a guide on here?

There are not really any ins and outs to your card...the only thing i can think to mention about your card is that it has subpar cooling compared to a dual slot card such as my XFX 4870 which uses the dual slot cooler...so you need to pay close attention your fan speeds and temps

Watch your temps and start overclocking whilst checking for stability...shoot for 800/1050 and beyond

What are your idle and load temps whilst gaming? are you manually adjusting the fan speed so that the card is running cool enough when idling/gaming?

You can use Rivatuner to adjust fan speeds/clocks and if you set up the OSD (On Screen Display) you will be able to have your temps/clocks/usage shown while you game

Oh nice, I just saw you had an OC'd xfx like mine, about what temps does it run at?

Sorry for the double post, but what it be acceptable for me to hook up a big fan and blow it straight onto the video card, instead of using an actual cooler for the time being?

If you strapped a fan beside the stock one that would be acceptable but you will of course need to run the stock one as well

Actually adding another fan should help cool off your vrms and memory significantly

My card is hot as hell...i can only game on it if the fan speed is 80+% and its loud

Before i forget to mention it you have registered your card for the lifetime warranty is that correct
