CPU hitting 100C

So I'm fairly new to high end computers and am in the process of mastering the concepts needed for passing the A+ CompTIA test. I like to tinker and my friend who is more experenced put AMD OverDrive on my computer. He joked around about the 'green' button at the top right corner saying it took him forever to figure out what it is, and so he told me its the stability tester (I believe this to be true. . ?) When I click it on my non-OC'd 3.2 GHz Phenom II 965 black edition my CPU temperature spirals upward crazily from its usual 35-50C to nearly 100C before I turn my computer off (unclicking the Green Button does not stop it!!)

So my question, thats not suppose to happen right? XD I did have to RMA my Mobo after using it for 2 weeks and it died, so I did remove my CPU and I reseup the Fan/Heatsink/CPU back up on the new mobo without using new Thermal Paste. Will not re-thermal pasting (There is still the old thermal paste on both the cpu and heatsink and I just kind of remoshed it back together) kill my cooling? Although I did the same green button thing before my mobo when bad and thats when I literally watch my CPU hit 100C. The fan is at 100% when this happens, its the stock fan tho (and stock heatsink) if it could be considered that much garbage. So please, any advice for how max load (I assume thats what a stability test does) runs my cpu temp into boiling and what I should do? Its not really a issue unless obcourse I'm doing the stability test but Dragon Ages Origins does make my computer get hot, I could just imagine a newer game with better graphics setting my computer on fire.

Wait you have a stock 965 running at 4.2ghz via multiplyer ? Also I'd recommend using Prime95 for stability testing although AMD Overdrive serves it's purpose the prime95 works for both Intel and AMD.

NO, that is not supposed to happen unless you are seriously stressing out your CPU to find out it's breaking point. AMD Suggests that no 965 should run over 65C either idle or under load. I would try re-seating your CPU Heatsync and possibly reapply a new layer of thermal compound.
You definitely want to apply new thermal compound each time you reseat your HSF.
... no comment but this feels like a troll post.

WOAH!
Dude non-OC'd 965's run @3.4 stock not 4.2!
I guess if your using overdrive you should check that you havnt messed with the multi or other settings
100C is WAY to hot for it

Like the rest said when re-seating ur Heatsink dont reuse TIM.
Goodluck!

I assure you this is no troll post, I just want some confirmation.. yeah I think I need some new thermal paste, my friend said this paste in the link is really good, it has some patiented thing that is amazing. Any opinions on what paste to use? I wasn't the original guy who set up my cpu and I have no clue if any paste was left over unused so I guess I'll just buy new paste. And for the old paste still on the cpu and heatsync, should I just take a butter knife or something and lightly scrap it off like its butter?

I meant what I said by NEW layer which would imply cleaning off the old.. otherwise I would have said to add an additional layer.
The best thing for cleaning the old stuff off is a glasses lens cleaning cloth. They're lint free so wont leave bits of fibre on the CPU

So I opened my system up, checked it out and the heatsink and cpu was covered in thermal paste of some kind, my friend when installing it must of used the whole damn tube. I used a Q-tip with rubbing alchohal and cleaned it allllll off, after that I applyed 'Artic Silver 5' a small dab of it like instructed in the middle, put my heatsink on and turned it left and right a few times and here I am booted up. I hit the green button on AOD again and I hit 90 degrees before I turn off the green button and now its sitting at 70 degrees slowly cooling off. The formula said there was a curing period, hopefully in time my system can actually handle itself at its full capacity (remind you all once again, the cpu is not overclocked, although my video card is). Going to turn her off for 20 mins to let it fully cool off, curing period instructions said to run a few cycles on and off so it can do its thang. Any guidance or comments is appreciated to my predicament.
Is your temps in ferinheight or Celsius??? Sounds like it may be F cause AMD's generally shut down when too hot.

If it is Celsius, you better get someone who knows what they are doing and stop. Lucky your chip is still good.

Thats not nice
I'm trying!! Its got alittle bit better after that reboot, sitting at 40C right now idle for the most part, just AOC, MSN and mozilla open

Status Update (if anyone cares) - All full load right now with my CPU fan running at 100% I'm sitting between 54-55C.. I still don't think thats where I should be, correct? I heard most a Phenom II should be under is 55C and its not even OC'd. *Crosses his fingers* I hope by the end of the curing process temps are atleast a few lower.
