I currently have a MSI TF3 7950 that I've overclocked to 1200/1500. I'm looking at either getting a second 7950 or a 7970. Mainly because I want a 7970 PCB so I can match with my current Heatkiller waterblock.

My questions is, would I benefit at all from getting a 7970 and overclocking it? or would I be held back by my 7950 even if it's overclocked? and in general would I gain anything by going with a 7970 or would my 7950 hold it back regardless?

Any card that is higher binned than yours you will benefit from. Sure, you can OC a 7950 to stock 7970 speeds. But lets not forget that you can do the same with the 7970.
I'd say upgrade to the 7970. Plus, you'll be matching your Heatkiller waterblock which is quite nice too!
Maybe you can get lucky in playing the silicon lottery as well

get the same card, in your case a HD 7950. a different card could introduce more frame latency issues . just put an autonotify for HIS HD 7950 iceq x2 boost at newegg.

Yeah that's the plan for now, hopefully it doesnt take too long, and more importantly actually does come back in stock. I might also pick up another TF3 from Microcenter since they seem to have older stock that may have the 7970 PCB.
