I purchased this from Newegg 5 days ago for only $85!! (got an awesome deal, had a couple credits on my account) I was wondering if I should just sell it for $115-120 Brand new Factory Sealed or use it.

If I decide to use it, i'll be putting my other 2 WD Blacks in Raid and using this for my OS. Is there anything I should know about setting up a new SSD other then switching to ACHI, and follwing this thread?

I don't wanna mess up anything or shorten the lifespan of my SSD, so if theres anything else I need to do (Other then what is said to do in the link above) before I leave it alone lemme know please. It'll be really appreciated and you'll be rewarded with +Rep!

So lemme know what you guys think! Thanks for input!

Why would you sell it?

That's a great drive. Put it in ACHI and disable hibernation and it will be fine. It should last 5+ years with no more optimization.

I think you will love it. I love mine.

Wait, wait, wait.. SSD's only last average around 5 years?

SSDs don't necessarily last any particular amount of time. They have an estimated number of writes before failure. If you never write to the drive it should last forever, if you continuously write data to the drive it will be dead in a few months. That's why people recommend not putting things like swapfiles on the ssd. Some manufacturer's like Intel generally give much higher writes before failures than some others. I think my SLC drives take about 30 years of "normal" use before they die. But those are SLC not the normal MLC that the C300 is.

If I were you I would keep it as a boot drive and look at those links to see how best to optimize your computer for it.

Always expect drives to fail no matter if they are ssd or hd, keep backups of critical data.

I meant 5 as a minimum. That's why there was a "+" at the end. I believe Crucial rates the drives for 20 GB of writing per day for 5 years. Are you going to be writing 20 GB of data to that drive every day?

(Hint: No, only crazy people will)

If you write 2 GB of data a day, which is still very high, you'll get 50 years out of it. (And we all know you will be upgrading much sooner than that)

Yea I noticed the + but thats also why I said average (Thought thats what you ment)

Yea I just hear alot about SSD's dying and such, but now I see that they last longer then regular mechanical drives.

Thanks

EDIT: Any other theads I should follow up on before/after putting Windows 7 32bit on my SSD??

Dude...
IMHO, if the SSD is designed to be a "Hard Drive" then use it as a hard drive. So what if you write 20GB of data everyday. If you have to "baby" it because it may damage or degrade it or can't handle it then it's not a drive ready for common use/prime time. I write over 60G a day because I move large DB files on/off my laptop.

Personally I think there's enough wear leveling on these that they can handle it. Wear leveling is the process that determines how often a section of the drive is written to and spreads that "wear" to other parts that hasn't been worn that much. With that in mind, you can derive that a larger capacity SSD will most likely last longer than a smaller capacity SSD.
Same concept when you put them in a RAID array. Take 2 SSD's in RAID 0 for instance, each drive get's 50% of the data blocks to be written as opposed to a non RAID 0 where it get's 100% of the data written to.

But that's just my opinion.
