CS:S crashes to desktop

Source is crashing to desktop with the "hl2.exe has stopped working" window ALL THE TIME. I can't stand this. This never happened before, it started doing this the past few weeks. Sometimes I can play for hours without a problem, but sometimes it crashes every 5 minutes. What can I do other than reinstall the game?

It's not the drivers, I did check integrity of the files and defrag.

This happened to me previously not until I had to reinstall the game, clear any leftovers over at the registry.
Are you playing custom maps at all by any chance? Sometimes my GPU when not at stock didn't like to play CS:S. That's even if I was underclocked.

All Source Engine games. TF2, CS:S.

No, lately all I've been playing is de_dust2.

registry.blob file has to be deleted in some cases. see if that helps you.

I had half-life do the exact same thing. Google it, it has a thread on this problem in the steam forums.

You have to run the game in 32-bit and not 64, so right click the name in steam and set it to run in 32-bit

That's actually a Half Life 2 and Half Life Lost Coast exclusive problem. CSS and TF2 don't have 64 bit modes.

OP: What anti-virus program are you using?

Yeah, I had the same thing pop up for me with HL Lost Coast. Mine wouldn't crash but would never load. It would stay on that screen that it shows in both HL2 and HL:LC before the main menu shows up.

Okay, I'm sure you've looked at this, but if not try some of the solutions on this page.

But before you do that or if you already have, I'd say try to alter resolutions, or ideally play in windowed mode.

Disabling multicore rendering has also solved this issue for me in L4D and TF2.
I have AVG Free 8.5. And I was playing yesterday, and it wasn't crashing anymore. The only thing that was different was I closed two Firefox windows that were taking up over 300MB RAM. Could Firefox have caused Source to crash? My RAM never went above 60% full when playing.
