whats the average amount of pinging people are used too? 15ms for me in the UK

at my folks house, half Mb BT Line with horrific attenuation, ~60-70ms

previously had 8Mb to myself in London, usually about 10-20ms. Loved it. Though that was more to do with the raw downloading speed.

Is CSS one of those games where ridiculous FPS is beneficial though (ala COD4?)

Haha, try it when it cuts out every 12minutes due to the phone line being ancient
In fairness when it works I can play so it's not too bad. I haven't forgotten the bad times (33kb dialup, 240+ms)

I get the difference between fps and lag - easy to spot people lagging, especially if you flick around in speccy mode. If everyone's butter smooth bar 1, he's lagging.

Though when you're lagging yourself it's trickier to spot, because of all the smoothing on your end, hence all the 'I don't lag' comments. But once again - spectator mode on CSS shows it all up for what it is- if everything's a slideshow on it, you need to stop the porn DL, or find a better server

Just as an extention of all this FPS/lag talk, is it actually advantageous to have more FPS though? (like how (i believe) you can jump further in COD 4 with 300fps than 45).

In which case, shouldn't us OCer's be pushing this by all playing on Low detail

IMO though, CSS is unplayable below ~50 FPS. 40 and below is def. unplayable to me. Sad thing is, Vista + a 2.5ghz dual core 939 amd CPU = minimum fps's of about 30, even with my card. Hopefully this Kuma can clock and not be fussy at about 3Ghz so that my minimum FPS won't be so low anymore
.

If that's the case then having 400fps vs 60 doesn't really make any difference.

That's odd about your system's minfps - I'm anywhere between 40-130fps (though I don't do AA, HDR or fancy reflections). I'm always aware when I've got powersaving mode on though, since my CPU gets throttled to 1GHz, and I get ~18fps on CSS, about 8 on TF2.

As is widely known the source engine is really CPU reliant. So I think the Kuma will see you well. My X2 is a 2.6, but if I ratchet it up to 2.8 I find it does help with the occasional slowdown (software OCing Dell MBs ftw)
