Lag has nothing to do with frame rates - frame rates are how fast each frame is redrawn on your own PC.

Lag is based on ping and latency - how long it takes him to send the information to the server, and also on your ping and latency - how long it takes you to receive the information of his position from the server.

If either you or him has a high ping or latency then he will appear to jerk because the information your receiving on his position isn't coming fast enough for him to be shown as moving smoothly

And there is nothing wrong with a ping of 60-70ms

Haha, try it when it cuts out every 12minutes due to the phone line being ancient
In fairness when it works I can play so it's not too bad. I haven't forgotten the bad times (33kb dialup, 240+ms)

I get the difference between fps and lag - easy to spot people lagging, especially if you flick around in speccy mode. If everyone's butter smooth bar 1, he's lagging.

Though when you're lagging yourself it's trickier to spot, because of all the smoothing on your end, hence all the 'I don't lag' comments. But once again - spectator mode on CSS shows it all up for what it is- if everything's a slideshow on it, you need to stop the porn DL, or find a better server

Just as an extention of all this FPS/lag talk, is it actually advantageous to have more FPS though? (like how (i believe) you can jump further in COD 4 with 300fps than 45).

In which case, shouldn't us OCer's be pushing this by all playing on Low detail

That contributes partly to the problem...

But many people try to "rate hack" so to speak.

In CS:S you have a cl_cmdrate and a cl_updaterate. The cmdrate controls how often you recieve data from the server, and the update controls how often you send data to the server.

Now by setting the cmdrate to the max value of 100 you get the most data sent to you from the server that is possible.

And by setting your updaterate to 100 you send the most data possible, but what if you set that to 10? Or even 1?

That would mean that you can get a lot of data without sending hardly any. Sort of like leechers in torrents, and nobody likes leechers.

Not true. If I play css in a LAN game on my laptop, I have 150 ping because of the low FPS. The computer just isn't processing the data fast enough to keep up, so your latency increases.

So, fps can affect your "lag".

And, "cs has a max of 300 fps" made me lol.

Actually you're right, I didn't think of that.

sigh*

Playing CS/CSS in more FPS than your Hz gives you a higher update rate from/to the server with a cost of screen tearing...
It's like getting paid for eating poo...

If I cap my FPS to 30 I'd still have low ping... it's nothing to do with FPS it self.

I'm not talking about capping FPS, I'm talking about a computer that cannot handle the game well. If you just cap the FPS, your PC will have no problem sending the data on time.

Keep in mind that the server has FPS as well, and it needs to be kept at or above a certain level to maintain the tick-rate. The typical for public servers (which I'm assuming most of you play) is usually capped at 333FPS, and 66 tick. The likelihood for public servers to maintain that FPS is a different story though, seeing as how the servers are heavily populated, running several useless mods, and the boxes are probably overloaded. Private servers used for scrims/matches typically range from 512-2000FPS and are almost always 100 tick.

When you're playing on a 15v15 Dust2 server, the server itself will be having trouble managing the FPS to keep the tickrate at a respectable level, so that's when people notice lag and blame the other players. Private servers have more FPS, less players, and typically only one mod (zBlock), so the performance of this server is much better.

Your not looking at the right thing, you cannot have 150 ping on a LAN server. The information transfer size is huge.

FPS has nothing to do with how much you ping. Ping and latency are not the same thing.

Exactly.
If the PC is so slow that it would give a 150ms ping I'd rather isntall Windows 3.1 on it...

exactly. the default is 300 and whoever raises that is ******ed(except for the benchmark). Leave it at default and play like a normal person, lol. Also comparing benchmark fps to gameplay fps is completely different. Try getting that 700fps in a 40man pub server

I like how you posted a screenshot of yourself looking at a dark wall. Who doesn't get high fps with anything dark? Go into a full server with a lot of action going on and post a screenshot.

LOL

Oh that annoys me incredibly. Guys I have a 12 GHz Quad Core! 3GHzx4!!!!

This is what annoys me.

"What, your only getting 80 fps? I'm getting over 200 fps so imagine how much better my game looks than yours."

This is the reason why I haven't upgraded my gpu. It's not a difference we are going to see without using our imagination
