Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said there is a lack of creativity in the games industry of late due to publishers' reluctance to release new IP this late into a console cycle.

This, Guillemot believes, is why the industry is "in depression" and the release of next-generation consoles is needed to pick things back up.

"If we look at the industry's history we see that there are times when it is right to introduce new IP and times when it is harder," he said to MCV.

"At this stage in the consoles' lifecycles it is possible to do new IP, but it will be more attractive when new consoles come along. That's when consumers are more open to trying new things. As consoles get more mature it is the big established brands that soak up most of the sales.

Any rationale they want to come up with for a new console is fine by me. It's long past time for us to be getting hyped up about a new console. The fact that we've heard nothing from anybody probably means that 2012 is a longshot, we're looking at 2013 or later. Bullcrap, give us some new hardware, dangit.

It seems to me that the games selling new systems are typically sequels to tried and true IPs. I have a hard time believing that a new IP has a greater chance of success on new hardware as opposed to current consoles with audiences in the tens of millions.

I'm sure they can manage to stand out earlier on in a console's life, similar to Resistance on the PS3, but that doesn't strike me as something you'd want to bank on.

The current gen is having its last hurrah this year with matured, well optimized AAA titles but i really don't see what developers can do next year, or the year after to top it.

There's only so much that hardware can do.

I think the biggest stagnation will be seen in sports games.

In other news: XYZ´s CEO has said there is a better chance for a new IP to succeed when there is a larger base installed.

I completely disagree, anytime is a good time for releasing new games and IP´s, God of war franchise came up when PS2 was 4 years old and still was a great success.

I think they are you using the easy way to make money, instead of truly innovate, they just want $$$ when there is a higher chance to make money.

Well, I think there were whispers from Microsoft that they're going to milk the 360 until ~2014/15... I gave up on consoles and sold my Elite a few months ago; money much better spent on my computer. BRING ON FALL 2011!

I think of Intellectual Property when I see IP but Im not 100% that is right in this context. It basically refers to new franschises.

Edit: got beaten by a second or two.

Pfffft. Devs and publishers aren't the ones with HUGE money on the line in new consoles. Microsoft and Sony are. So its their call. If they can milk more money out of this lineup then yes they will. What can the devs do? Stop making games? Nope they'd go broke.

Funny. The CEO of a company that constantly pisses off its paying customers wants to blame everything else for his industry's (probably mainly Ubi's) "depression."

New hardware or not, they're lucky to have the Assassin's Creed franchise. They would be hurting much worse otherwise.
