DD 5.1 through SPDIF-in?

I'm fairly certain that I can do this but I figured I'd ask before dropping a bunch of money on a new sound card:

Right now, I run stereo sound from my video game consoles into the line-in jack on my onboard sound which then plays out of my PC's 5.1 speaker setup (Logitech X-540). That way I can get my PC and video game audio coming out of the same speakers and I can control all the sound levels from my PC.

If I get a new card with an SPDIF-in port, will I be able to run Dolby Digital 5.1 from my Xbox/PS3 through my sound card in essentially the same way I do now with the stereo sound?

Like I said, logic tells me that it's totally possible, but I thought I should ask first.

EDIT FROM BELOW: "well anyways maybe I should try to reiterate what I'mlooking for in a simpler way. Basically I would like some way to get dolby digital 5.1 out of my game consoles while still getting my PC audio out of the same speakers.

I was wondering if cards with hardware DD decoders (such as this HT Omega Striker) would allow me to do this. I've been trying to read up on this and guess I wouldn't be able to this? If not, what are some other options?

I just really need both PC and game console audio simultaneously, as I use them in tandem more often than not."

Yes its possible. If you have a sound card that is capable of dobly decoding / encoding that is.

For example most mid-top end X-Fi's or an ASUS Xonar DX / D2X.
You'd want to make sure the card is capable of passthrough, if not then you're screwed, Most consumer card's only allow stereo signals through the SPIDF in.
Just re-read your post if you're trying to go from SPIDF in to Analog Outputs on soundcard to get 5.1 audio, this usually will not work with most sound cards out there.
You can enable the monitor for the input so it plays back whats being input.

Sorry could you explain that a little more. I'm not really sure what you mean.
