ddr2-800 or ddr2-1066

Alright folks. Here's the situation.

I'm beefing up my backup/folding rig and it has come to the "what ram should I pick up" section of the evening.

I'm running an evga 750i board... the non-FTW. I will support up to ddr2-1066 and I'm wanting to start off with 4gb, moving to 8gb.

Gonna match this with (hopefully) an e8400.

that said, what would you guys recommend? Go with 800mhz and try to OC the ram a bit on this board... or go 1066 and run it stock?

Also, any particular brand recommendations.. it's been a while since I purchased ddr2... the last was some Geil-pc4300 about 4 years ago.

anyway, +rep for some helpful answers here.

Well ddr2 800mhz usually have lower latencys = better but lower speed than 1066 mhz, so some will say 800 and some 1066 mhz...

I have been very satisfied with my G.Skill 1066 mhz RAM, but it is kind of a personal choice IMO.

I think i would go with 800mhz with 4-4-4-12 latency

Well DDR2-800 is esentially DDR2-1066 just better. To be honest, go with the 1066 for OCing and the headroom. Thats what I would do.

If a folding rig, is RAM critical? I thought not. I would get 800Mhz with the normal v I mean most your 1066Mhz normally has the v upped to like 2.0v. I would stick with 800Mhz @1.8v then if you want to OC go for it. Just up the v? What ever is the best deal is the answer.

DDR2 1066

Why bother pushing 800, when with 1066 at stock you will already be at 266 MHz higher than 800. That will far out weigh lower latency.

Personally I've owned 2GBs of Corsair XMS2 DDR2-667 and 4GBs of Gskill PC2-8500 1066. You will find because 1066 ram is designed for 333 FSB you have a little more headroom in pushing a greater overclock to 400 FSB and beyond when running it a ratio of 1:1. While 800Mhz ram is designed for 266 FSB.

These days more and more companies are "binning" their ram, and they sell the poor performers as 800, and the better stuff as 1000 and 1066. So unlike a couple of years ago, you can't really buy 800 and expect it to clock to 1000. (unless you buy really expensive stuff)

Moral of the story: Get some G.Skill Pi 1066 and never have to worry about the RAM being the bottleneck of a monster OC.

Ram isn't "designed" to work at any specific FSB. That is the job of the memory controller. DDR2-800 will work fine with FSB from 800 all the way up to 1600mhz, as long as the correct ratio is set.

Most of DDR2 800 should be able to oc to 900mhz+. Depending on the price, get the 1066 if price is similar. Otherwise, get the 800.

GSKill PK 1006.
GSKill PI 1000

i vote for DDR2 1066. stock timing for my Gskill is 5-5-5-15 and cas lateny is 5. the DDR2 800 is 4-4-4-12? not a huge difference. u can find DDR2 1066 that will run at 1.9v.

prices are similar, both 800 and 1066 are ~$40 for 2x2gb and up depending on brand

plus, if u OC, u will have more options when setting ur CPU:RAM ratio if u have 1066...

What? Your numbers make no sense? 1066Mhz RAM with 266Mhz FSB is a 1:2 ratio? Where do you ever get a 1:1 ratio? Just asking? 1066Mhz with a 333Mhz FSB I think is a 2:3 ratio?

yea, 1066 is 1:2 w/ a 266 bus speed.

thats what im running now. 266x12.5=3.33ghz; rated FSB is 1066mhz and ram is 1066mhz. symmetry FTW!

done and done, thanks for the help guys. After dealing with ddr3, my mind was a bit boggled.
no prob
