Dell Inspiron 10, 12, and 13

I'm looking again for a small netbook/laptop. The Dells mentions are all $399 each. All I need is WiFi for internet browsing.

Does anyone have either one of these? Comments? Opinions?

Can they each be downgraded/upgraded to Ubuntu? Don't really care for Vista on the 13".

I don't own any of those Dells but I own the Asus Eee 1000HE. I love mine and would highly recommend it (see this thread for pictures). The reason I chose the 1000HE is because of it's amazing battery life (7+ hours), even though it has a high capacity battery it doesn't stick out the back (like some other netbooks with 6-cell batteries), the chiclet style keyboard is really great for a netbook, uses the new Atom N280 1.66GHz 667MHz FSB CPU, has 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LED backlit display, and 160GB hard drive.

I had the Dell Mini 9 for a little while. Personally I preferred it over any other netbook do to it's looks, great construction and it was 100% silent. If I were to get another one I'd get a Dell.

And I'm sure you could load linux on to it, just bear in mind that you won't have a disc drive so it'd have to be via USB.

One of these has a Celeron CPU. The other 2 have an ATOM. How does the Celeron compare to the ATOM?

P.S. I can't really see the Mini 9 with a 8Gig SSd drive. Your pictures showed the drive half full straight from Dell. Something a lot bit bigger for me.

Ubuntu will run fine... Wifi should work IDK about the desktop effects but it will be fine.

The Celeron would be slightly more powerful I think, but would use significantly more power than the Atom. If all you're using the netbook for is light, general computing tasks, the Atom is the way to go.

Check here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...t,1981-13.html

A Celeron at 1.20 GHz is 35% faster than an Atom at 1.60 GHz, but the Atom only consumes a fraction of the energy used by the Celeron. The AMD Sempron system, which uses almost the same energy in idle mode as the Atom system, is 43% faster.

I'm looking at the Mini 9 right now. With Ubuntu its $229. I'm starting to give in.
Oh hell. I just ordered it. The Mini 9. I couldn't pass up. $229. Talk about impulse buying. Geeez. Now I can learn Ubuntu. What kind of memory does this take? Newegg here I come.
i'd have gotten get an EEE 1000HE tbh

well over the cost of the dells but for the battery life and keyboard IMO it's worth it.

that said ubuntu is real easy to learn. i read through the ubuntu user guide, and read a couple of ebooks on how to use it and i was sorted. in the links below you can find a wealth of good info

It'll accept most DDR2 533 or DDR2 667 SO-DIMM modules from reputable brands such as Kingston, OCZ, Corsair, etc up to 2 GB.

Ubuntu's pretty easy to work with. However, I would wipe the HDD and start with a fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop 8.10. Dell uses a customized kernel of Ubuntu on their Minis and have two partitions (1 read-only and 1 write - SSD version).

Does it not accept disreputable brands?

I stuck a 2GB Stick of G.Skill PC2-4200 in mine. There's only one RAM slot so make sure you get a single 2GB stick. There's a link for my Dell Mini 9 review in my sig if you'd like to see what you're getting
.

Congrats on your purchase.

I was thinking of doing that. However, I just checked the Dell "drivers & download page." Its all Windows XP. There is nothing specific for Ubuntu. All the drivers listed are for XP. What happened to Ubuntu drivers?

.
Do you need feedback on Dell mini 12 as well? I just bought one.

You'll have to grab some proprietary drivers using Ubuntu's Package Manager for the 945GSE chipset and the GMA 950 integrated graphics. If you browse around the EeeUser Forums you should be able to find some workable drivers for the webcame, touchpad, and WiFi.

No thanks. I wasn't expecting to buy the mini 9, but couldn't resist the price. So I have to learn up on the mini 9 now.

Considering Dell is selling a computer with Ubuntu installed on it, shouldn't they have all the drivers available instead of hunting all over the internet?

They might, but you'd have to look. As for hunting, you may not need to. Ubuntu will have a pop-up notifying you that it has installed a generic driver and that there are proprietary drivers you can download and install. The pop-up window will already have the proprietary drivers on it and all you have to do is select them and install them.
