Check out my configuration.

So the current price comes out to $1,144. I think it's pretty decent. I'm going to order a 2 X 1GB kit from newegg since it'll cost me sub $100 and it cost $150 to upgrade from Dell. They gyp you so much

Opinions?

There are 350$ discounts for Inspirons configured at 1399$ or more.
The coupon code is TSD1$NG00WFD4N . For Inspiron 1420/1520/1720.
Hope it's not too late, you'd buy a cheaper laptop with better specs
though I prefer the 1420 for its smaller screen (I go with mobility).

Thanks for letting me know. But I found this myself last night when I was searching for Dell coupons. As a result, I upgraded the CPU to..I think a T7100 or something. I also changed something else.

I might do that. Not a necessity though. If I do, I'll order it off egg, which is at least $70. But, again, not necessary cause my girlfriend doesn't game. I might just be playing around with it
I upgraded the video card to an 8600GT

Here is an update of the current build.

Sub-total $1,092.00 (deducted $350 with coupon)
Tax $91.44 (Omg..)
Total Price $1,183.44

I will also order 2 X 1GB from egg for approx $80.
Total: mid $1200s

Any other recommendations? Brands or other laptops. I'm willing to look into others.

Even, if she doesn't game, a 7200RPM would benefit her, more so than a CPU upgrade. The HDD is the slowest component in a PC, and in laptops it's even slower. On the other hand any Core 2 Duo will do.

Again (I'm stubborn
), would she prefer a 14.1" or a 15.4"? the only difference between these systems is that the Inspiron 1420's best GPU is a 8400.

As for other laptops, there's the HP Pavilion dv6000t (or z), though the best GPU is a 7400.
