Nice way to buy a top of the line computer if you have no knowlage on building one yourself.. and have a ****load of money to spend. cause that is the only thing i find bad.. THE PRICE! its really expensive..

yeah but u dont have to worry about the hassle of waiting for parts, this and that. i didnt think 1800 was to bad. espicailly for sli 7800's and dual core with 2M cache

I would say a dell is for a person that wants a kick ass computer but doesn’t want to mess with anything else. Anything dell has isn’t very upgradeable so keep that in mind. But the XPS usually comes with monitors, keyboards, and 5.1 speakers and that crap adds up when you are building a brand new system.

Yeah you'll pay a lot more from buying a high end system from them then you would building it. However the software is always the crappy part when trying to rival there prices on lower end systems.

I dont have much against Dell, other than they ultimately overcharge. They make a sweet system, and they are finally figuring out that the custom market is not something to be trifled with.

The fact of the matter is simply: you can build a rig of the same or better stature, put the software you WANT on it, and still come out cheaper in the end. Sometimes alot cheaper, sometimes only a little...but still less.

but would u really even need to oc. i mean i know its habit to try it but from the looks of it, it seems it would be fine to leave at stock. dual 3.2, sounds pretty fresh to me. but then again is it a combined total of 6.4, or what. i didnt say it was emt64, or is that a given

I think you all are misled, like most others, about you get in $1800

P4 2.8GHz - Dual Core
6800 (doesnt specifiy GT or Ultra)
1GB RAM

Look at this page and you'll find $1800 for that system is a complete rip-off..that system can be had for a good $900-$1000, maybe less the only thing you dont get is support or a warranty but most products have 1 year or lifetime warranties

And did you look at the configuration for the $1800 system? Thats with a dual core 2.8, 1 gig of ram, a 6800 (single), Windows MCE, etc.

Good marketing scheme. Always watch for the "starting from _____" Where ____ is some really attractive price (like 1800 for an SLI 3.2 dual core rig)...

Check my post #5. The link in that takes you right to the configuration page of the $1800 system. The first selection is processor, and it's on the Pentium D 820, which is a 2.8.

Personally prebuilt systems are the worst thing, especially if you know what you are doing with computers. Prebuilt systems are expensive, non-upgradeable, and just down right suck. The fact that you cannot upgrade them means that in a few years it will go straight to the dumpster (all its worth in my opinion).

Here is my quick breakdown (off the top of my head) of what it would cost to build nice OC-able system yourself: (all in USD)

Case: 50-100 (decent case, 50 and you have to cut your own holes for fans, 100 you dont)
PSU: 40-120 (if not included in case, price depends on your tastes)
Motherboard: 100-200 (Higher price usually more options for OCing)
CPU: 100-200
CPU Fan: 40-80 (I paid 40 for mine and it works great)
RAM: 100-300 (Depending on quality and amount(1-2GB))
Video Card: 100-200 (Prolly gotta get a sale to get a good deal)
Hard Drive: 100-150 (300GB prolly gotta get a sale here also)
Floppy Drive: 5-7 (these are super cheap if you dont have one laying around)
DVD/CD Burner: 50-100 (again, might have to get a sale)
Sound Card: 25-50 (Mine is a 5.1 Sound Blaster and is only 25-35 these days, works great)
Speakers: 70-100
Fans and Fan Guards: 55-65 (If computer case needs to be moded)

These are prices that i have paid myself.

So the total comes to 835-1672

This is of course asuming you have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. If you do not add the following:
5-60 for keyboard OR 20-60 for combo (even wireless)
10-50 for mouse OR 20-60 for combo (even wireless)
Monitor: 120-300 (CRT-LCD monitors)

Note, these prices DO NOT include rebates which are very common. ALSO, if you decide you have to go all out on components which is not nessicary it could cost considerably more. (For example: 150 on a wireless keyboard and mouse that is really no better than one that costs 60)

Personally, if I'm spending that much money on a computer, or even anything, I'd like to know where and how that money is spent. Plus, being a tech junkie, I'd need to know that I built it up myself. Guess it's a pride thing. That way, I can tweak it the way I want. I'd never buy a prebuilt just because I can always get better quality parts with less money. There's nothing special about any of the parts. Remember, you're also paying the people who assemble the computers. There's no way I'm going to pay someone else to do the part I love to do most. I'd pay more attention to my machine, I do things the way I want done and it's free if I do it myself.

It's blantanly obvious that building is cheaper, and All the damn crap-ware Dell throws on their computer pretty much sucks of the memory (not really just venting).

The only time you need to buy retail or pre-built, is if it's your first computer since you dont have the peripherals or OS (since peripherals can cost just as much as a system itself) or if you're buying a laptop.

If laptops could be built at an afforable price I'm sure we would all build one
