So, I did some modification to the board's northbridge cooler that takes up too much space by my first PCIe slot.

Can I install my card into the second, in single card mode, and still receive the same bandwidth? Surely there's a BIOS option for this...

thanks.

According to what I've been told at DFI-Street you can just plug it in - if that doesn't work then enable SLI in the BIOS

In the manual it says for the corresponding slots in different modes:

SLI Mode Bandwidth:

8X - 16X PCI Express slot

N.C. - 1X PCI Express slot

4X - 4X PCI Express slot

8X - 16X PCI Express slot

Single VGA Mode Bandwidth:

16X - 16X PCI Express slot

1X - 1X PCI Express slot

1X - 4X PCI Express slot

2X - 16X PCI Express slot

So you guys are saying if I were to use the second slot it would be like this?:

Single VGA Mode Bandwidth:

2X - 16X PCI Express slot

1X - 1X PCI Express slot

1X - 4X PCI Express slot

16X - 16X PCI Express slot

When it only detects the one card...

Plug it in and then run a benchmark...you'll see

NF4 does not have very many PCI-E lanes so you can have 2x/16x 8x/8x so just use the motherboard jumpers to enable sli and use 8x on the bottom slot

I refuse to use a lower bandwidth!

I still haven't got my answer, all sounds like speculation...

So it IS possible to get 16X on the second PCIe in single card mode correct?

The motherboard will detect it in the second PCIe and will limit the first instead?

Well, I actually am working on my board outside of my system and would like to get it finalized before I put it back in. So, if by putting my card in the second PCIe slot in single GPU mode will limit me in any way, I will have to do something about my northbridge cooler..

No, you cannot get 16x out of the bottom slot.

Take a look at your board.
there is two 16x slots a 4x and a 1x. There are 20 pci-e lanes your north bridge has. I'll let you do that math

yes, but what if it were to limit the first PCIe and allow the second as in 2-1-1-16 instead of 16-1-1-2..

yeah I know, but that'd be less goodness for my card..

You really think that much of your card that it's going to take more than 8x bandwidth???
