So what are the best practices here? I'm having some of my work stations show up as having registered the same address in DNS.

In other words, we from time to time have two workstations show up on our network that the DNS server reports as a single assigned IP address.

Any advice on this complicated topic is appreciated.

Too tough for this board maybe, eh?
I'll poke around Google some more.

Manually assign them. Some that have WOL features the NIC stays online, even though the workstation is off. So it does not release the IP/DNS info. The DHCP server still sees the station as "online". I would personally manually assign each work station so that way you can break them up into segmants like... Workstations IP Range 192.168.1.100-50 Servers 192.168.1.10-40 and so on.

Adding to kc-tr... You can actually set reserverd IP's in DHCP so all the machines are still set to use DHCP, but the server would look at the MAC and assign it an IP you already told it to. This leaves the opportunity for guests to use the network without having to mess with their NIC settings.

Exactly! This would be a great way to do it. It is very efficient, and works. And it also limits the possibility of a conflict. rep+ SoBe
