did i apply thermal paste wrong?

so i got the masscool 8wa741 awhile back to shut the ****ing delta stock fan on my old cpu cooler, its MUCH quieter now(thank god), but the temps haven't changed. idle ~33 (both cores) and ~48 load with P95. I used the paste that came with it, although im glad the noise is WAY down, the temps should be lower tho, right?

4850
IDLE @ ~50c
LOAD @ ~67c

E4500
IDLE @ ~33c
LOAD @ ~48c

so temps are ok, but they should be lower with the new cooler.

its possible- how did you apply it?
hard to say if you applied it wrong when you dont say how you applied it

I used a zippo bag, put it in the middle and started rubbing it(the paste you pervs
)
last time i checked i saw that the paste was still not dry, but still wet.

Does this mean that once you applied it, you then took it off to have a look at it? Because once the HS is placed onto the TIM you are not supposed to remove it again, as this can cause air pockets to appear.

here is a lovely video showing different methods.

I would put the thermal paste about the size of a grain of rice in the center of the cpu. Clean the old thermal paste of with 91% isopropyl alcohol and q-tips for the cpu and heat sink

people say to use the X layout and proceed put putting on the HSF.
i either do it w/ a zippobag, put m finger in it and "smeere" it all over the chip in a thin layer

or

i just put an drop (not big) in the center and just put the cooler on it
works both great for me

i think i did that, since the top left screw didnt go in.
i might try the line method.

WHY A BAG???????????????????????????????????????????? Use a credit card to spread it evenly across the proc!

How do you brush your teeth in the morning?

Everyone does it differently, but the job always gets done.

Different strokes

for different folks

Pretty much, as long as you don't use too little or too much you will be fine.

Should be fine. But you shouldn't use the paste that comes with the cooler, it's usually ****ty, buy some OCZ Freeze or MX3.
There are lots of ways to apply thermal paste, but the best way for dual cores and quad cores, is to place a line like this:
and then put your cooler on top if it and twist it a little to remove any air bubbles.
You should get some isopropyl alcohol to clean your CPU and then re-apply with some after market thermal paste using the line method. I hope it works out for you.

EDIT: Wait.. did you remove the heatsink to look at it? That's a very bad idea as there's a 99,99% chance that air bubbles will appear. Air bubbles is not good and can mess your temps up. You want your CPU to have direct contact with the heatsink through termal paste, air bubbles removes that contact.

this is the best method. wiggle it till it fully covers the CPU and cooler base contact area.

Nothing wrong with a bag, credit card is worse in many ways.

Stock crap sucks. Get yourself some AS5 (Arctic Silver 5) from Radio Shack
Way better. But it pails in comparision to IC7, which is just crazy! But 10 USD for 1.5 grams, its a little.... pricey.

Might be true. I just used that picture to show how to apply it, not the amount of TIM that should be used. One line of TIM should be enough

Also, try reading my guide (it works very well with ALL TIMs, not just thick ones. But if the TIM is like AS5 and is conductive, spread it out evenly before puting your heat sink down)

TIM application Guide: http://tinyurl.com/pgq9h6
thanks guys!
appreciate your help!
I have that same cooler and it is really good for the price. Never used the stock TIM, it looked crappy and I have arctic cooler ceramic. Go with the dot in the middle of the processor, my E2200 idles at 27*C with this cooler on 60%, so my guess is either its applied wrong, or the stock stuff is utter crap.
