Did I do ok?

I just picked up an open box / refurb Visiontek 4850 at Fry's for $170. This one, to be exact: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...siontek%204850

I had a hard time deciding between the 4850 and an Evga 9800GTX+ that was $179 after MIR (looks like Newegg is $15 less after MIR and free shipping).

I think I did ok...the box was shrink wrapped, though the Fry's discount sticker was under the plastic. I figure I would have had to pay sales tax on Newegg since they have a warehouse in CA plus wait for shipping or a rebate.

Worst case, if the card is broken I'll take it back. Best case, I'll have a fancy new card that will get me some stutter free Company of Heroes!

$170.00 wasn't really a deal imo. But its a good card none the less.
Yeah, $170 isn't really a deal. You could have gotten this one, which is slightly overclocked, and has far better cooling for $170.
I personally would have gone with the 9800gtx+. Benchies on this site show it gets over 10 frames better on COH, and it beats most other games as well.

Also if you are patient you can find the 9800gtx much cheaper...

It's $182.49 up front at Buy.com

Put this coupon in your cart for 5% off (-$9.12)

Then go to www.rebation.com and click the link to buy.com which will give you another 6% cash back (-$10.94)

Then finally you have a $20 MIR (-$20)... for a grand total of $142.43
Yeah it's a pain in the ass but it's almost $30 cheaper!

IMO you should of gotten the 9800GTX, either way the 4850 is a beastly card.
Interesting...the Toms Hardware VGA charts showed the 4850 beating the 9800GTX nearly every time. Though I don't know how much extra horsepower the + adds...

I think it's ~8-10%, probably more because you can overclock the gtx+ further.

Oooh yeah, look at that. Didn't think about checking other brands.

Guess I'll be taking this one back and maybe get the Gigabyte or Asus ($140 after MIR + free shipping).

Rep + for pointing that out!
