Well i'm trying to understand CPUs a little better and i'm wondering what makes the new Core2 CPUs better than AMDs FX-60. What are some of the stand out features that make it better and faster.

Also i'm just curious but how much would you think my rig would go for if I sold it around April?

The Core 2 Duos, or Conroes, are faster then the FX-60 and the AM2 CPUs because they do 12 ops per second compared to the Athlon939/AM2's 9 and P4's 6. Thats why they can be much faster at lower GHz. They are also 65nm compared to AMD's 90nm so they can OC higher and still be very stable.

For your rig (not including mouse, keyboard, or montior), right now maybe about $1600, and in April... under $1000.

That sums it up basically. Also Conroe has a much better Architecture.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Also what does 65nm mean?

And is AMD making a new CPU to compete with the Core2?

65nm = 65 nanometer, its how the data is processed, the lower the number the more efficient, less power consumption, better OC, and even a bit faster I think. AMD is still working on their K8L to compete with the C2Ds but when they're going to release it... nobody knows

There is way more to it than just 12ops to 9 ops, for example, what exactly allows the core 2 duo to do 12 ops. There is *so* much more that I can't even begin to understand without putting hours upon hours into reading about it.

K8L is out Q2 or H2 (don't remember which) of '07 and it is going to compete with both kentfields and core 2 duo and maybe yorksfield

Don't forget, the Conroe also has 4MB of L2 cache

I hope AMD comes back to the lead again. They were always ahead of Intel... AMD had the first 8th generation processor in 2003 and Intel didn't catch up until summer 2006.

L2 cache size doesn't affect K8 anywhere near it does for Core 2 Duo. K8 doesn't have latency problems, Core 2 Duo on the other hand does, and the insane cache sizes are a way to mask it.

AMD WILL take back the performance for at the very least a couple of months, after that it's all down to how well Yorksfield performs

Well the Conroe Core will have 4mb l2 cache but the Alendale has 2 mb l2.
