I don't think you can upgrade compatibility of DirectX versions in video cards, especially with DirectX10, which is not compatible with previous versions.

If you try to run Windows Vista (which uses DirectX10), I think it can be able to emulate DirectX9 or some other method.

Nope, you can't change it.

They will release an emulator, but from what i heard, it works REALLY REALLY BAD, so upgrading to DX10 is a huge must
so when i get vista i wont have a problem running it on my 7800 gt

Don't get Vista until you're forced to. You probably won't want to play any older games once you do(DX9 or lower) because they'll run like crap.

oh ok then thats solves that problem, thanks guys
MS made a huge mistake making it so that DX9 and older cannot run DX10 and DX10 cannot run DX9 or lower.....unless you use HORRIBLY SLOW emulation software which is really a bad idea, G80 will be out June the 6th and will be the first SM4/DX10 card and thats what Im getting
You will be able to run DX9 on a DX10-compliant card, right?

I think you've received bad info. Where did you read that G80 will be DX10? All information released so far was that it wasn't DX10. Link?

Well thats a pitty that Vista will run emulation for DX9 because alot of people have DX9 cards lol...Well we will have to wait and see what it is like but im still sticking with trusty XP.
Bah, I'm not goin DX10 untill Microsoft fixes this whole DX9 thing, if they ever do that is...
im not goin to vista until i absolutely have to... lol or untill my next build and i can get a DX10 card for it....

Yes thats my thought aswel on the matter

Essentially, this is what is going on, and I am trying to be fair to both sides.

--First off, don't complain too much that Dx9 cards wont run Dx10. Its not like Dx7 or 8 cards run Dx9, why would 10 be any different.

--Next, understand that Dx10 (also called Dx Next) is a totally new system for games, and its simply unrealistic to build it on top of directx9 (which was build on 8,7,6,...etc) They needed a new platform, and we are just the ones that happen to be around to bite the bullet on it.

--Still, I agree that it sucks that Dx9 will have to be emulated on a software level. However, I am confident that Microsoft will not release Dx10 until there is a feasable solution to Dx9 gaming. I simple cannot believe that MS would leave Dx9 and below out to dry. And I imagine developers wouldn't be very happy about such things occuring either.

So, in all, I believe MS has their work cut out for them ,but for anyone who has worked with game design and the fundamentals of any API, you must understand that there is no 'easy' button for this industry. I think the sooner we can support Dx10, the faster it will be implemented and done so more effectively.

Where did you read this at? I have read from about 3 sources that DX9 cards WILL NOT be able to run DX10, microsoft has made it completely non-backwards capable. This means, if DX10 can not run DX9, then DX9 won't run DX10.

BTW, it's not called DX next...it's called Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0.

Lastly, Vista will run on DX9 cards, it just won't have the aero-glass (the transpart part, if you look at screen shots).
