I know some of you are skeptical about the INQ, but here you go:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35110

basically, the new DirectX 9.L revision will allow you to play DirectX 10 games on XP. You'll still need a new video card, but you won't have to waste money on Vista.

nice if it's true you don't have to buy vista until you want it you can keep playing on XP

Actually, Vista has DX10 imbedded into it, and with XP it's just upgraded from DX9, so it might be a hard change.
I doubt this actually will happen.

I dunno though, someone/thing/it may make a mod for XP, they may have stopped support for SP1 but W2K support won't stop until 2010, so i don't see support for XP stopping all that soon.

I believe that's true, since Win98 was supported till the start of '06.

Yep thats right as some companys over in the far east were still using 98 on their servers so they got support longer until they could upgrade.

But like the article says, I doubt nVidia or ATI will sell as many cards as EA want to sell copies of crysis.

its not typical EA its called making money

Nvidia will not be able to manufacture enough cards, even if they do sell all of them , to satisfy the need of the consumer wanting to play dx10 ( dx9L whatever you wana call it ) games.

Too bad my X1900GT will be obsolete in a few months... I'm getting DX10 for UT2k7.

I'll need new vid card and (if it makes a difference) a physics card. The 805 at the speed I have it at should handle almost anything, and since I won't be buying a top notch vid card my PSU should be fine.

Don't buy a physics card, Cait. Did you see the article about how quad core Core 2 processors can have 1 core specifically for physics if the game is coded properly? It seems like that will be the downfall of the physics card.

I'm not completely clear on this. So will you be able to have DX10 quality graphics on XP or will you just be able to play DX10 only games with DX9 graphics using a DX10 card?

Do you happen to know if core duo will also be able to do that too or is it only quad core?
