An interesting tactic to make people more aware of what's going on...

Software used to control thousands of home computers has been acquired online by the BBC as part of an investigation into global cyber crime.

The technology programme Click has demonstrated just how at risk PCs are of being taken over by hackers.

Almost 22,000 computers made up Click's network of hijacked machines, which has now been disabled.

The BBC has now warned users that their PCs are infected, and advised them on how to make their systems more secure.

Didn't sony do the same thing except they forgot to tell us about it and allow us to remove said "malware"
isnt this considered "hacking/hijacking" someones computer?
how is this legal and why arent they get brought up on charges for doing what hackers do all the time...
when hackers get caught big no no, but BBC " o but it was for research" makes it ok.....
bunch of shizza

I agree.

While I applaud the effort to make people more security minded, technically their actions are just as illegal as those who run real botnets. If I did this to my neighbor, for example, sure he might thank me. But he might have me arrested too : /

saw this the other day on the news, was pretty crazy how many pc's they accessed after a short amount of time. also it wasnt just the UK they tested it had IP's from malaysia and iraq all over the place.
This is absolutely illegal under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.

The fact that no damage was done is rather secondary to the act of taking over the computers and putting weird messages on their desktop afterwards about how they've been violated etc. et.

Fuller discussion can be found on theregister.co.uk and theinquirer.net.

Inq can't be trusted on matters of this nature...

Saw this on the news a while back. BBC News conducted this test. This was legal it was a announced and controlled test example. They flooded their own emails just to show the public how botnets work.

Oh, I agree. The Inq is basically the red top equivalent in the computing world.

The register is somewhat more reliable, and includes quotes form that dude at out-law.

Perhaps should've edited it. Anyway, further discussion on the subject:

Personally I believe they've acted in the public interest but outside the law, and am very uncomfortable with the idea of them paying botnet operators money from my license fee for this.
