So earlier today I was having trouble connecting to a certain site (I normally have problems) and thought the site was down, but then I tried a web proxy and it worked, so problem was on my site/net.

Out of the blue I though i'd change my dns to Google's public one (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) and the site works now.

So what I have is my normal dns and my primary and my secondary as Google's one (site works in this config), now my questions are;

1) How does the PC know it must change and,
2) Does it change globally so every site I then connect to (once it has changed) uses the secondary one and
3) Can I check which dns I am using on a specific site?

set your DNS on the router. When your PC's connect to the router to obtain an IP address via DHCP, they will utilize the DNS that is set on the router. Hence if you want 8.8.4.4 as the primary every computer connected to the router via DHCP will use 8.8.4.4 as the primary DNS.

Pretty much ^ that.

1) PC obtains DNS server entry when it obtains it's IP address from the DHCP server, from the DHCP server.
2) Sure, if you change it on the router and renew your lease for existing clients.
3) Use nslookup and then the site name. It will tell you the nameserver you're pulling from. Generally you will always use the 'primary' or first entry unless it is down.

We can see here that the DNS server which provided the answer was 4.2.2.2.

Have already setup the dns on the router so I get them through dhcp.
Have my isp one set as the default, then the google ones as secondary and tertiary. but you havn't really answered my Q's

if you want to use Google as the primary you need to set it on your router as primary. When the PC renews it's IP address, when the lease expires it will automatically use the new primary DNS set via the router. You can force this by going to your command prompt and typing ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew

PC's will only use the secondary if the primary is unavailable. If the primary DNS does not have the record yet the Secondary does. It will still only use what the Primary DNS records show...

Long story short, if your ISP DNS is your primary and it doesn't have all propagated DNS records. They have something hosed in their setup or the record was recently changed and has not propagated fully throughout the net, which normally takes 3-4 days.
