I've tried googling it but I'm not entirely sure...

The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if I can plug it into a parallel connector or SATA connector...

A friend's macbook HD died and I want to plug it into my PC and use my uber recovery programs to get her pictures back.

...I don't even want to take the drive out if I know I can't interface with it...

They are SATA, but any tool you use will need to be able to read HFS filesystem.

They use standard hard drives just like most notebooks. However many of them use an adapter for the interface to hook up with the notebook. You can use that adapter or remove it to hook up normally. The hard drives themselves are standard HD's created by many other manufacturers like samsung toshiba hitachi. Apple doesnt create their own hard drive or make them proprietary at all.
digitalsonata is correct though, its the filesystem thats proprietary and you will need that to read the data.

MacBooks use standard 2.5" SATA drives. You just plug the drive right into the chassis. I should know, I've changed the one in this MacBook I'm posting from 3 times now - once to upgrade to a bigger drive, twice to replace failed upgrade drives.

It's a regular HDD. Taking it out is simple: remove battery, remove L-shaped cover, lift HDD tab, pull from tab.
