Hi I know I need to plug in the 12v cpu cable from PSU to MOBO, but DO I also need to plug the smaller EPS connector as well?

I have a 5900X with Corsair HX850.

No. Only the 8-pin. 4-pin or extra 8-pin are only if you're overclocking like crazy. LN2 type of crazy.

ok cool thanks, my last mobo only had the 8-pin so wasn't sure.
Just to add for posterity, the 8-pin EPS connector is rated to support 235 watts continuous power, or roughly ~300 watts surge (this varies a bit). For example, a *typical overclocked Ryzen 5950X at full tilt won't draw 200w due to the thermal barrier (it starts becoming difficult to get heat off of the IHS).

* 182 watts package power, 30% over stock PPL.
