The flames do indicate a hazard. I concur with your guess that it is in fact a explosive device.

I need to get a 2nd PCI-e power adapter as my hiper one is broken

Get out the molex pin remover. You need four yellow wires. Plug/tape/solder those to the card.

The power adapter is £3 - I think I can spare it.
