I'm planning to replace my hd4850 with hd5870 and now I'm thinking will my e8400 keep up with the new card. My e8400 runs @3,6Ghz at the moment so there is headroom left for oc. Please tell me your oppinion because if I need new cpu I will build whole new system with i7 920 on it and thats going to cost a lot more than just a new gpu

Well it definately will keep up as long as u clock it to 4GHz!Its easy mate!!!Real simple and with tiny voltage increase!1,36 core should suit u good for 4gigs!!!

hmm
those look decent to me
well the only thing that i would pay attention to are the load temperatures, they are just a bit high.
but im confident you will b able to OC to 4,0 man
its not too bad with a good e8400
its been done with a AF7 Pro
soo
cant wait for results man

So i once more pushed my cpu to 4,0Ghz. This time I first encountered problems with my memory, 6-6-6-18 latencies were reguired(used to do 4.0Ghz with 5-5-5-15).
After getting memory stable I started stress testing with prime95 and noticed that cpu temps were rocketing above 74c. Thats bit too high for my taste so I lowerd clocks to 3.92Ghz now temps stay below 70c. I hope I can get temps lower by cleaning my heatsink(it's full of dust
)

It seems that my e8400 has seen it's best days....now reaching 4.0Ghz reguires more volts than it used to

EDIT: To reach 3,92Ghz 1.33V needed for stable system and to reach 4,0Ghz 1,4V

About a 1066 FSB should be plenty. But mine is running at.... 1600!!!!!

lol you have my old avatar, when I saw this I was like: *** I can't remember posting this....

OT, Yeah. OC it to 4GHz and you will be good. Dual cores are usually the best choice for gaming anyway as the majority of games doesn't support more than two cores at the moment. You'll have yourself a sweet gaming rig

The E8400 and 5870 should get along fine, even at stock speeds, and if you overclock that E8400 up to 4GHz+ then your system will fly. It would probably be a bit weak for a 5870 CrossFire or 5970 setup, but for a single 5870 it's a great match.

Even at 3.6Ghz it will be fine but since its a dual core try to get 4.0Ghz 24/7 to get most out of your card. Maybe try to go 5850 and save the money because truly no point on getting 5870 because they are within 1fps once they are clocked the same.

I actually had the same question but with an e8400 at 3.6Ghz and a 5850. Do I need to overclock it like Kaippar should or because mine is a 5850 vs. 5870 the E8400 at 3.6Ghz is fine?

So 5850 can be overclocked to 5870 level?

But can 5870 be overclocked to blazing speeds?
If not then I'm definitely going to buy 5850.

Your cpu will handle that card just fine @ 4.0 and yes its a good match however, your needing to keep your load temps at bay and speaking from experience with the E8500/E8600 using a zalman 9700 with good tim wasn't getting the job done. I have since switched over to a xiggy dark knight using MX-3 and dropped from 33c idle to 26/27c idle and ambients were the same at the time of the switch over.

Even without a 4GHz OC, you will be perfectly fine. If you see a slight bottleneck, upgrade your monitor. You're fine.
