I am currently on T-mobile (AT&T) and have come to realize how much cheaper Virgin Mobile is. Add to that the fact that Virgin now has legitimate Android phones, I am thinking about switching to them...

My question is, the difference in month rate would be about $35-45 (until AT&T starts raising them)

Is it worth $840 over the next 2 years to have a phone like the rooted, custom rom'ed Vibrant (my current phone) that can play and do anything vs. having a 600 Mhz phone like the Optimus V (best phone on Virgin) where it might struggle in some apps...

Opinions?

Any other factors I am forgetting to consider?

Odd... Virgin Mobile Canada has the Vibrant, and a host of other awesome Android phones.

Don't get the Optimus V. Slow, tiny screen, low resolution... you'd hate it.

The Vibrant is compatible with Virgin Mobile's 3G bands, so it should work. If you call them and tell them you want to switch they probably won't care if you keep your old phone.

Virgin is an actual carrier in Canada - in the US it is simply a pre-paid phone service. It is $25 a month for unlimited data and text and 300 minutes with no contracts. They run off the Sprint Network. The US Version of the Vibrant is a T-mobile phone...
This is the best phone available through Virgin Mobile.

That's not how it works....

lol, what are you talking about? It might not be an evo or a thunderbolt but for the price it's a great phone. Especially with gingerbread with it's gpu acceleration there is like no lag anywhere aside from demanding games.

You're right. Virgin is CDMA, so you can't even buy a cheap phone and swap the SIM cards.

Still, its not worth it.
You are absolutely 100% wrong, no it's not the fastest phone out there but for 25 a month and really the only real downsides of the phone is smallish screen for modern phones and lack of flash which can be made up for with skyfire anyway. Most people can overclock the phone to 800mhz+ which puts it right behind last years best as far as processing power goes.

To the OP, get the optimus V. I'm running one with a gingerbread rom and I have absolutely no lag outside of more demanding games which I don't even really play. I save 50 dollars a month and can do pretty much everything you could want to do with a smartphone with the exception of playing more demanding games which I honestly don't care about anyway. Angry birds and snes roms run just fine on it and those are the most demanding games I play.

I just recently switched from simplemobile (tmobile) to the optimus v from virgin. I could not be happier. I had a mytouch 4g on simplemobile. Was great until I found out att bought T-Mobile so I sold the mytouch 4g and switched to virgin and honestly the optimus is great for the money does everything my mytouch would do and I don't notice the lag. I do miss "4g" speed sometimes but virgins 3g is no slouch either
