So you have your Doom 95 CD-Rom and or ISO or heck even Master of Orion 2 or maybe some other game you liked playing from back in the days.

Now you install your beloved game only to get a DPLAY.dll error saying...

* "Dplay.dll Not Found"

* "This application failed to start because dplay.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

* "Cannot find [PATH]\\dplay.dll"

* "The file dplay.dll is missing."

* "Cannot start [APPLICATION]. A required component is missing: dplay.dll. Please install [APPLICATION] again."

Well I figured I could down load it and got on google and came across this

Well I tried this and it failed only to find dpx.dll wich i copied and renamed dplay.dll only to fail some more. I pondered a bit and realized it's 64 bit so wow (Windows on Windows) might have something to do with it and to look into System instead. Just as I was about to go looking into System I saw SysWOW64 BINGO!!! I thought to my self. Sure enough there is was dplayx.dll so I made copy and renamed it dplay.dll. Now doom 95 was running great till i got garbled colors. I played with in the Resolution setting tab and found out leaving windowed mode checked runs it full screen but, in normal colors!
EDIT: It doesn't seem to matter if it is set to full or windowed. it seems to reset it's self ever time you run it. Apparently the funny colors go away after the first run.

So go to..
C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64

Find dplayx.dll copy it and rename it to dplay.dll and you should have some older games working now. Hopefully this is old news to most, if not I hope I helped some one.



FYI when you run doom it will re size windows like steam or your icons if you have a crap ton.

Thanks for the post, your pretty smart. it fixed my problem. I haven't played this game in years. You look young and like one of those wiz kids. I mean in that in a good way. I'm in my 50's and kinda new to this but you helped me figure out what i never would have on my own, thanks again and keep up the good job.

Dude, thank you SO SO much. I followed your advice, found the file, copied it, renamed it and it works

You saved me from having to pay $10 for a download of that file that may or may not have worked. Where at in Missouri do you live? I live in Kansas, so were neighbors sorta lol

I just wanted to say thank you for this little problem that was fixed for me.

I fiddled with a few bits to get this to run without the odd color problems by modifying the .exe properties. In essence, I just opened the folder I installed it to, right-clicked the "orion95.exe" file, went to the compatability tab and tried various settings until I got something that worked. ( I tried attaching a screenshot

but the server isnt taking them). I selected the checkbox next to run this program in compatability mode:" then changed the dropdown list to "Windows 95". In the "Settings" below fields below that, I checked "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640x480 screen resolution". Most of the time some variation of that seems to fix alot of visual issues with alot of my old games. Granted my system is running 32bit win7 but they both do the same thing in relation to compatability mode settings

Great solution CDoubleJJ and good tip One Crazy Guy .. just want to add .. If you are starting these old games with Bat Files, hit the Button "change settings for all users" and add a check for "run program as an administrator" .. For me Orion95.exe has a funny error when the program exits, but i can live with that

I may have an idea on how to fix that based on bat file for age of empires 2 on win 7, i think the windows explorer is the cause of the funny colors.

First off thanks for the tip on where to find the dplayx.dll even if it is a pretty big necro post.

Had done this before but have recently reinstalled to an ssd and forgot where it was.

Oddly enough if you right click the desktop then pick 'Screen resolution' and simply leave it on the screen the master of orion 2 colors display normally.

I found sometimes that trick only works if you set the theme to windows classic, open up set resolution AND leave the "themes" panel open as well. I was able to play diablo 1 that way. Also i think Doom 95 allows for 800x600 though i might be wrong and it allows for 640x480 and no higher.

I solve the windows colour problem with MOO2 in windows 7 by just killing explorer.exe in Windows Task Manager..

I would like a simpler solution though
