Driver Order on Win7

438 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bigal1542
Hey guys...I received my new Dell SXPS 13 about two weeks ago. I am planning on formatting it with the re-installation windows 7 CD that came with the laptop (I want to get rid of those pre-installed programs). I was just wondering what order do I install the drivers in?

Thanks,
Wasbo

Win7 will install pretty much every driver that you need. I am typing this on my SXPS 16 and it worked great. It just knew what to download. The only ones I had to get new ones of were when Dell put up the new drivers for the stuff I am using (I did this with a RTM build before Win7 came out). Just let it do it on its own. Then I would recommend doing the video driver and possibly the internet one (those were the ones I noticed improvement with).

I agree. Install Windows 7 and let it do it's updates. Go through the optional updates and pick the ones you want. Then once Windows is all up to date, go and find the drivers for things that still don't work.
Oh, I never knew that. I never let vista do those optional driver downloads, good to know

Do note though, just because something works doesn't mean it has the most up to date driver. Even though Win 7 will get drivers for almost anything make sure after that they are the most up to date drivers by checking with the company who built the hardware. This is especially true for motherboards and graphics cards.

I'll be sure to check out Dell's driver website

Hey Guys,

So I formatted windows 7..and I am doing the drivers for my laptop. So far I got bios done, chipset, network, and video done. Is there a need for the other stuff? Or, are those good enough? Also, I tried pressing "Check for updates" on win7 but it says everything is up to date. I also went to device manager and everything was fine, no errors. Also, under the monitor section it says generic pnp monitor, is there a driver for that? Or do I just leave it for a laptop.

All help is greatly appreciated,
Wasbo
I'd just say leave it all until something is causing a problem. For me, every month or two I go and check through to make sure all of my drivers are updated again just for the best possible performance.
