So, whats the dumbest computer related thing you have ever done. Can be recent, can be in the past. Lets all laugh at eachother. Heres mine. Recently some storms rolled through dallas. I called my fiance and told her to unplug my laptop from the surge protector in the kitchen and move it to my bedroom and plug it into the UPS... cause, as you know, laptops dont have their own built in UPS's... its called the battery...

When I was uber ignorant about computers a while ago, i threw out a whole rig because i broke the heatsink on the CPU and the computer wouldn't start up. So I thought it was dead. T_T

LOL im pretty sure mine will beat all fo yours lol, i started ocing with this system

2400+ amd Athlon
soyo Dragon 2 plat Mobo
512x2 kingston hyper X
and a ATI 9550 Radeon

well i was a noob so i was unsure about setting someone told me yo up the voltage so i did that WAY TO MUCH to like 1.7 or somewhere around there keep in mind theres a stock cooler on this and 1.5 is stock voltage for a athlon 2400+ i up the voltage loosened the timing and then saved the settings and ran sevral tests on it i left my room for about a hour while the test was going when i came back i smelt this most awful odor and went to my computer because i thought it went to stand by because the screen was black next thing i know i look over into my computer theres melted plastic all over it. so i unplugged everything took the cover off and took the CPU out to find a BIG HOLE in the center of The CPU and to find then pins literally melted off the CPU and the pin holes on the mobo some were completey sqaushed as the melted and the hs pressing towards the motherboard i was like crap. and needless to say i got the pins out and of the mobo and i got a diffrent CPU put into it and guess what the MOBO still works i swear soyo has some tough MOBO's.

Wiped off the stock thermal pad on an Intel Socket478 cooler, because I thought it was used to protect the copper base during shipment.

Then my computer started restarting playing games, called up Intel rep, he told me to check temperatures.... It read 75C idle, and he said you have a problem with your cooler and we will send replacement.
Moral of the story, never run a CPU cooler without some type of thermal compound between the cooler and IHS/Core.

I put my CPU in the wrong way after I removed the IHS. Wouldn't start and I got worried then realized that I was being an idiot.

I actually did something very similar. The first rig I took apart for practice before I did my first build was my moms old HP. Took it apart, put it back together, turned it on, got nothing. I figured I had somehow managed to break it so I took it up into that attic and just left it there. Few weeks ago I took it down to take it apart for parts, looked inside, and realized I hadnt connected the psu to the mobo. Plugged it in, plugged the psu to the wall, and it chirped back to life. CPU works perfectly except for all the holes in the case from the squirrels in my attic nibbling at it.

I did a couple times in the past take my hole computer in the living room and onto the carpet to play arround with parts and clean it.
Luckily nothing ever happened.

When I was trying to install my BT, I was having kind of a rough time. I couldn't find that H-plate! I spent at least 20 minutes looking for that thing, going crazy, because I hadn't even moved it.

"I can't believe those dumb sonsabit**** didn't give me the right parts!" And a few other obscenities....

Of course the H-plate was in my hand.

HAHA *****. I've had that happen too.

Oh yeah, the worst I've done is taking a whole new computer, which I was sitting at and thinking "OMG It's so fast I want it faster" and switched the red little button on the PSU. Guess what happened... My fingers burnt!

Well... in the past there are countless stories... most of which I've already posted oc.net.

As for recently... well.. lezee... My roomate brings me into his room and shows me his CPU @ 60C in CPUZ

Me: O_O!!!!!

I tell him to shut down his computer, but before I can it BSODs and we turn it off immediately.

My initial hunch was right... I wasn't careful to ensure that his heatsink was mounted FIRMly.... I helped him build it but he insisted on doing a lot himself under my supervision... The heatsink was barely even touching the CPU... Thank goodness he randomly opened speedfan.

when i was taking apart my first rig a couple years ago, i took the Heatsink off the processor, and it came off with it. It was stuck to the bottom of the heatsink and came right out of the motherboard. I didnt even really yank it. it bent pins, broke some off ect. Ended up buying a new Mobo and processor.

Ok second place goes to assembling a whole rig stock heatsink mounted and everything but forgetting to even put a CPU in...took awhile to clean the thearmal grease out of the holes in the motherboard socket.

First place goes to running a rig outside of the case and moving the hard drives around while running and stacking them on top of eachother leading to frying a hard drive, then moving the other hard drive to get at the fried hard drive and placing it on the metal removeable cage the hold the floppy just in time to fry that drive...

I threw out a load of Pentium 3 CPU's (must have been about 5) once as i thought they were broke, turns out my Slocket (Slot 1 to skt370 converter) only worked at 66-100Mhz FSB not 133 FSB like the CPU's

I once vacuumed out the inside of an old computer and broke it.

Trying to think of more
