This was in production a long time ago. I didn't realize that the release date was so soon though...
Wow, only $2500.
I bet Google has their eyes set on this for their servers. This chip is only for dedicated servers and professional companies. Whoever uses this chip for home use is stupid.
Definately only for servers. Only 2.4ghz operating frequency wouldnt even be good for workstations now that Nehalem is released.

I wouldnt say stupid, if you have the money and want to play with things maybe even if you dont need them then so be it. It would be neet to play with one just to see what it can do.

Plus for those people that have servers at home or similer things it wouldnt be a bad idea.

I just started thinking though. Wouldn't Nehalem with its 8 virtual cores out perform this chip for server applications? It sure is a heafty price tag even for a XEON.

As a server chip, energy efficiency is also implemented and that's something Intel didn't have to worry about with the i7's. Look at the power consumption for this CPU. Same as the 45nm Core 2's - 90 w.

Last time I heard, Google actually doesn't have really high-end servers (they're still transitioning from the P4/Netburst era). They just have heaps and heaps of them

Thats pretty impressive, 6cores with that much power usage must have some decent temps, thats not bad at all.

Well my high school is just coming out of the Windows 98 days. They're still using Novell and P4 IBMs >.>

High schools are a whole different beast, especially public schools. If their computers operate just fine with those ancient versions of Windows and other software, there's no need to upgrade.
Yep I heard about this chip. I even recommended it to some of those people who come on here and ask for $10,000 builds. I think it scared them off...

Edit: No, wait, it was the X7460 which apparently is too high-end even for Newegg...
