I just completed my new build and have been testing my parts out with Orthos a little bit. My room temperature is 80, so it's about 26c in my room. Idle, Speedfan shows temps of 28-32c, but while running Orthos it got up to 51c after 30 minutes. The temp got up to 45 after 5 minutes though, so I'm wondering if you guys think these are too high?

I don't know if a lot of you have the Thermaltake V1 cooler, but that's what I have. I'm using Shinetsu (can't remember specifically, but it's the more popular one) paste. I'm new with everything, so I'm wondering if I might have spread the paste on wrong or not.

If you run at stock speed then it very high load temp. Mine run at 4x8=3.52 at the same temp with you (Big Typhoon). Your idle temp look good. Take the V1 off and see if the paste spread out even all over. Try to reseat 'em.

Anyone else have an opinion? If I do take it off, what type of alcohol should I use to get the paste off?

I tried to spread the paste evenly on the entire surface of the cpu, but I've seen people suggest just putting a line down the middle of the cpu? Should I just do that?

My e6420 hits about 45-47c (never touched 50) on Orthos load. It's running at 2.8ghz and I'm using a Zalman 9500.

Chozart helped me build my rig. When he put the AS5 paste on, he just put a little teeny dab in the middle of the CPU (smaller than a BB) and placed the CPU on top of it, letting the pressure spread the goo around. Seems to have done very well.

Smaller than a BB? It didn't seem that I put too much, but I know I put more then that.I'm pretty sure my setup should be getting better temps then that too. I'll have to reapply before I consider overclocking, but until then I think I'm okay. Thanks guys.

The V1 might look nice, but isnt the most effective cooler available, and not recommended for major overclocking.
those temps are still a little high, even for the V1. you might want to look at my TIM-application pic.. It show the optimal way of applying TIM to your CPU.
you want the line to be about 1mm thick, or less.

Wow, that's really useful. I didn't do that at all. I put really small dots across the cpu and then tried to spread it evenly. It was pretty tough to spread, so these diagrams could've saved me a lot of time. I just put the line and put the cooler on top right? No spreading? Also, what do I use to clean the cpu and cpu cooler before reapplying?

I guess MaximumPC doesn't test enough coolers out because at the time I bought the V1 they ranked it as their favorite tested. I know they at least said it should cool better then the 9700. I'm not planning on doing really major overclocking. Maybe just to 3 ghz or a little more.

What do you think should be the maximum load temp I should keep as the limit for overclocking?

Considering this guy got about 9 degrees cooler then what I got http://www.hi-techreviews.com/Joomla...w/3974/27/1/4/(he tested it twice as long too and had a degree cooler idle), I think I should reseat the cooler. Or does the e6600 run cooler then the e6420?

There's an inherent problem with testing and evaluating air coolers, in that air cooling performance is highly contextual. In other words, there are many inter-dependent factors that make up the complete picture when it comes to air cooling performance.

Ambient temperatures, cable management, choice of case, choice and configuration of case fans, TIM application, the CPU (or any other chip) being cooled, temperature monitoring software/methods (heck, maybe even the shirt you're wearing) all influence air cooling evaluations. This is why I take even the most professional air cooler reviews with a bit of a grain of salt; this is one area where the custom PC maxim "YMMV (your mileage may vary)" is most true.

In my opinion, the only true way to find which air cooling solution is best for you is to test the coolers yourself in your own system. This way, the only variables that may be out of your control are ambient temperatures and your consistency in applying TIM. Everything else is a controlled variable, and therefore the results are more likely to be consistent and reasonable.

Thanks for the info. My temps have dropped a little (I guess the TIM is getting broken-in) to 46c. How do I find other temps around the motherboard like the northbridge and southbridge?

Are they shown in temp1, temp2, and temp3? I don't know what those temps are for, and the temp3 has to be off because it's showing -55c right now and has shown 101c before out of the blue.
